I'm not saying that window bars are a bad idea, but who lives in a decent neighborhood and ACTUALLY uses them?

Motion sensor lights. No one should be without them. One of the most basic and effective ways to deter criminals.

Oh and prickly bushes around windows.

If there has been enough crime to make a neighbor move out then we can certainly question the "decency" of the neighborhood.

I even have a portable one I built. I mounted the motion light to a block of wood and wired them with an extension cord. I can move them around as I see fit.

the neighborhood actually isnt too bad. The house across the street sold last week for $650,000. There are a lot 'small', burglaries and stuff. Its not remotely close to being bad enough for bar windows, though.

Why would there be a methane gas smell?

I dont know, maybe if someone who knows this can clarify. I know methane gas itself is undectable and quite deadly. perhaps in small quantities it is sedative, yet not lethal? Perhaps it was to keep us asleep...

But for someone to use methane gas to fill the house in order to sedate the household, it would take a very large quantity to do so, and therefore make it very hard for the person to flee. Also if it is undetectable, then how could you smell it?

so half a million dollar homes without A/C? I guess it's possible, since my uncle's house in Orange County only has central heating

Scary stuff. Good idea with the dog. But if I may make a suggestion, the most important thing really isn't how big the dog is (although it is a very big intimidation factor if they make it inside) the important thing is that the dog makes as much noise as possible.

There is a show on some channel like Discovery where they actually have criminals break into people's houses. They have families that volunteer saying they think their house is safe. The show puts cameras all throughout the inside and outside of the house. After everything is set, they have the family leave the house and get into a "command center van" parked out in front of the house to watch what is going on. Understandably everyone I've seen that volunteered is greatly disturbed by the show (think about it, you're watching some guy break in and walk off with things like pearl earrings that were passed down in your family for 4 generations). Granted they give all the "stolen" stuff back at the end of the show, but alot of people still get really pissed off. I saw one where the husband went after and tried to deck the "criminal" when the host introduced him to the family.

I also saw one that the house had a big intimidating dog (Doberman I think). The guy broke in and when the dog came around (the dog never barked) he tossed it a couple of treats and made friends with it inside 2 minutes. The dog didn't bark or bother him the rest of the time he was in the house.

Like I say, big dogs are fine...but the most important thing is how much noise they make as someone is trying to break in. I may only have a pug, but she makes me feel a little safer because she'll bark her little head off if she hears the front door open and she doesn't see/recognize who it is.

A lot of times a noisy dog is better than most alarm systems. A gun isn't a bad idea as long as you are trained to use it. Sorry, I've always been taught gun safety since I was like 10 years old (actually younger I think) so it's my kneejerk reaction to say that when someone says they want to get a gun.

Guns don't have minds of their own.

Guns FTW

Dogs FTL.

Get yourself a P90. Compact, full auto, about $3,000. I reccomend a side of Desert Eagle to go along with that.

I would not get a dog PURELY for home defense. That's just stupid - and imo borderline 'cruel' (and I'm not a hippie dog lover either)

Personally - I don't have time for a dog. That's why I have a springfield xd. It ended up being a fun hobby too,

Flood lamps, maybe a stun gun, and a baseball bat are ALL safer things than a gun.

The stun gun is the most hurtful.

Guns kill people, and they can just as easily be used to kill you.

morale of the story: use the bathroom before attempting robbery to avoid shitting your pants and alerting the victims to your presense.
