So my dad has a job for me... *Update: I'll be using Navision*

At first I'll be creating reports and stuff using some database (I'll learn more about it when I start on tuesday). After a little while, I'm actually supposed to be coding stuff on this system. I don't even know what system I'm working with, but apparently it is some system that was just bought by Microsoft.

I don't have any real experience working with this stuff, but my dad figures I have the smarts to learn what he needs me for. He says normally it would cost him like $120/hr to pay someone to do this, and he's willing to pay me up to $50/hr! (And here I am applying for sh!tty jobs that pay 7.00!)

This is insane... I'm so excited. I hope I can learn this stuff quickly. (Btw, I'm 21 in 16 days and still have 2 more years left at university)

sounds like a fun job. Sounds like my first one a few summers ago (internship doing a whole bunch of financial stuff and ASP/Perl/SAS programming. fun)

Why bother going back to college (if you can keep that job)?

If it became full time, I might put off going back to school for a little while... maybe. I would like to get some degree so I can say I did get some education.

Dang, will this become a full time job?

I don't even know if I will be able to do what my dad needs me for. If I can, they will keep me on (at the moment it might just be like 10 hours a week or something). But who knows... I'm gonna phone them back right now and find out what system it is that they are working with so I can do some reading up on it to get a bit of a head start.

Oh I dunno, maybe he actually wants to increase his mind and grow as a person rather than be a base money grubbing social climber? Just a thought 😎

Well there's that, but also if he ever wants to change jobs, a degree would help.

BigToque - have you ever worked for your dad before? Do you two get along?

I have never worked with my dad before. We don't have a very close relationship, but there is no tension or anything between us. My dad knows I'm really smart and is giving me an opportunity. If it doesnt pan out, no big deal.

What I'm doing is working for some company (or some branch of the company that he works for), that is getting this system ready for clients or something like that. My dad lives in another province (its the only place he could find work), and he will check back to these people I'll be working with and wants them to give him an honest opinion of my work. If I can do it, keep me, if not, he'll go somewhere else.

I won't feel bad if I can't do this because I know that I have no experience with it. (I very seriously hope that these people will give an honest opinion about me. I dont want them to say "yea he's great" only because they are working under my dad)

You are either getting incredibly hooked up or you must be some boy genius. I would say a little bit of both but I am leaning towards the former. I don't think any kid is worth $50 an hour.

I am getting seriously hooked up. The only reason I have this opportunity is because my dad is in charge of this project. On that same note, my dad would not give me the opportunity if he didn't believe that I had a good chance of being able to do this. He isn't going to risk his job trying to get his kid a job.

I'm very excited and hope I don't blow an incredible opportunity.

Valid concerns: you might just get the highs and lows of nepotism -- having the job is nice, but people might always question you deserving the job.

OOh, so it's Canadian money. What's that, $5 American? 😉

New insight on whats actually happening...

The people I'm working with are contractors designing the system my dads company is going to be using.

My dad is paying this company to teach me how to use the system they are designing. When my dad returns from the business trip he is on, he is going to ask them if I know how to use the system well enough. They are contractors and will give an honest opinion (there is no reason not to). My dad wants me to learn the system, then work for him if I can use the system.

The other part of this equation is that this company is also looking for people to design the system and install it around the world. If they think that I know my stuff, they might keep me on there as well.

It makes a lot more sense to me now...

Cliff Notes: If I can learn some stuff, I have a chance at 2 possible jobs. I am happy.

thats crazy talk- i wait for the day i become a base money grubbing social climber...

So don't you go screwing it all up. It's normal I guess to screw the things for someone else, but for your own father, man, that's mean. So if you don't know what your doing, better refuse, will save you lots of little grey cells.

No one goes to college for that. You can teach yourself pretty much anything under the sun if you really want to learn, especially with the advent of the internet. College is there so you can get a piece of paper saying your worth X amount of dollars if you work under somebody else.
