Wow so many answers and not one person told him exactly how to set it up yet. Ok well I'll tell you. It's just simple networking.

Go to the first PC and set the IP address to 192.168.0.2 and subnet mask to 255.255.255.0. Then go to the 2nd PC and set the IP address to 192.168.0.3 and subnet mask to 255.255.255.0. Then go to the third PC and set the IP address to 192.168.0.4. Make sure when setting the IP addresses your setting it on the NIC. Once setup you should be able to see each PC and have no problems playing games.

When you first set it up you said you used 192.168.x.253. Well they weren't all in the same subnet and you had no gateways or routers setup to cross over into their subnet. Hence filesharing stopped working.

Don't worry about IPX, Netbuei, or anything else. You only need TCP/IP for the games your using.

edit: Fixed typo in IP address

Wow! So many answers... In General Hardware! I'm NEVER posting a networking question in Networking again now that I see the difference 😉

Theres a Networking forum? .... 😀😉

in the ipx settings menu, there is something where theres a bunch of zeroes, assign each computer to a different number, that fixed my problem in a bunch of games when i did lan.

All right, but I just took off the IPX protocol, and just left TCP/IP, that should be good.

As an update:

I took my computer down to my other friends house, hooked it up, set my IP address to 10.0.0.2, and my subnet mask 255.255.255.0, and I played everything just fine. I did find simple file sharing and turn it off, and that helped. But I just can't seem to get it to work with my other two friends. We switched out the hub and everything, I still doesn't recognize the other computers. Some of us can ping everyone but not be pinged, and pthers can't ping, but can be pinged. It's really weird.

I kept thinking that it shouldn't be this hard, it should be simple, so many other people do this with no problem whatsoever. Then at my other priends house it worked fine, so I don't know.

And guys, don't think I'm a complete imbecile, because usually I can do pretty much anything with computers, and I know quite a lot. It's just that I have never tried anything to do with networking before and I am not having a good experience. My friends and I are now going on the fifth try at this thing.

Thanks for all the help, but I think I'm just going to have to drag one of my networking-savvy accquaintences over here.

Judging on how much trouble you have setting up a simple network, I fail to believe that.

Being able to do "pretty much anything with computers (and nkow quite a lot)" and "have never tried anything to do with networking" contradict each other because networking is a HUGE part of computers.

I am posting this in response to the few mindless imbeciles in this forum that believe that becuase they once set up a network, God gave them the right to critize and demoralize all the "NOOBS."
Now granted, most of the members in this forum are actually kind and helpful people, who care for others and want to help them. Koodos to you guys. But for you select few cough....Lifer who relish the idea of making people feel stupid, get a life, get a job, but most of all stop waisting your and our time on this forum, and get out.

Apotherix- If you want to fix your problem, just use the default IP addresses that XP gives to you, or use 10.0.0.x on all three computers, and set all the subnet masks to 255.255.255.0 Make sure all the IPX internal network numbers are different, or just take that protocol off all together, you probably won't need it anyway. Try pinging, and if they don't work then maybe it is your cables. It doesn't sound like it is your hub, however. If it doesn't work, then throw all of your computers off the nearest cliff.

Wow Jr what amazing advice.....too bad all of that has been suggested about 20 times now. If you're going to try and criticize someone (rightly or wrongly) at least learn to spell/type, read the thread and try adding some advice that hasn't been given numerous times already......

typo..? 🙂is the following being overlooked..or needed..?
make sure everyone is in the same workgroup

Touche, thorin

Your right maybe I should have read previous posts and posted somtehing worthwhile, but as for spell checking EXCUSE me for being a poor swiss immigrant working in the sweat shops of Philedelphia! I have had no oppourtunity for training in this cold world of rejected ESL students when all my excess money goes to my starving mother in the ghettos of Zurich.

SO please skip over any of my many mistakes, now that you know I don't know better.

Also I would be very interested in hearing your solution to this LAN party problem. I'm sure you wont dissapoint me.

Thanks for pointing out the typo I had in my original message, not that he took the advice anyways.

Workgroup does not matter for gaming.

Actually, I did take you advice, and you guessed it, it didn't work. And yes, we are on the same workgroup. I have simple file sharing disabled, and nothing. At one time I could transfer files, but could not see each other's created games, and now I can't even do that. It seems as though it is becoming counter-productive.

Oh yeah, thanks Philli, great help

The point wasn't that you made a typo, it was that you made typos while trying to put someone else down. You must not be sweating very much over there in Philly if you have time to waste here.

Very nice of you to take care of your Mom

Sure thing

As you agreed you should read the thread, I probably even made similar suggestions as you (at the start of the thread). Perhaps I even repeated someone (but not after I tried to slam them). Then I think I gave up when the guy admitted he didn't even know how to ping (and then forgot that he said he couldn't ping ..... ). <yawn>

Thorin your a great guy and I like you a lot. But obviously you have never been to switzerland. YOu don't know what its like, man! It's horrible over there, and they don't have any semblence of mother loving men like you or I anywhere. Then I move to Philli and guess what! They dont have mother loving men here either. All there is are brother loving people. I mean it is like living in San Fransico.

The point wasn't that you made a typo, it was that you made typos while trying to put someone else down. You must not be sweating very much over there in Philly if you have time to waste here.

And as for the sweating comment, it just so happens that my slavedrive bosses installed AC last week. And for my time wasting, well i just really like spending my time on this forum. thats all. Maybe that brotherly love is wearing off on me.

You're definately right there I've never been.

I think you'll find that most places you go (not 100% but definately alot)

I don't see anything wrong with that, except that it isn't what you're used to or what you were hoping for ... which could suck.

Just in time for the hear to hit eh? At least that's how it is here, just passing 20C over the last week or so.
And for my time wasting, well i just really like spending my time on this forum. thats all. Maybe that brotherly love is wearing off on me.
Heh yup this place is almost more adictive then /. And definately more brotherly (well most of the time anyway 😉 ).

Okay, I know how to ping, so drop it...
Dude relax, you've been getting help. I was just bustin yer chops.......

Thorin

Okay, I know how to ping, so drop it...
You should have said okay, I NOW know how to ping thanks to you guys.
One other time you said in regard to the firewall"I am not stupid" only to find out later that the firewall was turned on. Well guess what ^^^^^^^^^^

What is this all about? You have posted in the wrong forum, you have gotten THE solution several times. You do not seem to follow directions very well and then you get rambunctious and make demands of the ones trying to help you. There are several of you trying to get this going with several posters here giving you very good instructions it would seem that one of you could configure the LAN with the GOOD advice that you have gotten here.

Bleep

The firewall was never turned on, but I do thank everyone for the good advice. I'm not demanding at all. I'm actually very grateful to everyone.

(yelling) "Thank you everyone"

Is that good? I'm sorry it hasn't worked, and I actually expected it to, because every other problem I have ever brought to this forum has been solved successfully. This is a great forum, with great people, and I'm not disputing that.

And to think you missed the best days of LAN gaming: 10MBIT BNC cables! A load of fun, a b1tch to get it to work and once it did work the dog chews up a cable during a Duke Nukem match 🙂 Life was good back then.

But seriously all the sollutions to the most common network problems are in this thread. Me and my friend took an entire day to get our first network running with dog and all 🙂 just be persistent and try around within the suggestions given. Just be glad you don't have to learn networking with DOS.

I propose that you install Windows 2000 Server on one of the computers, install DNS and DHCP services, setup accounts and rights for all users in Active Directory, and then use it to host your games.

That should solve all your problems 😀

do some of the computers have built in firewire? just fixed an irritating network problem whereby windows xp automatically bridged my lan with my firewire, after unbridging them it seems to work fine now

No, but my friend had the same problem, and he got that fixed. I wish it was something like that so I could just fix it.
