SKS's were never meant to use detachable mags. You CAN use them, but with the adverse effects you described. :p

I'm looking @ AK's, anyone have a particular folding stock preference?

The side wire folder is definitely out, but don't know much about the other 2.

the underfolder looks the best.

http://www.vectorarms.com/indexframe.html

Torn between the wooden furniture & the plastic too, I like the traditional look of the wood, but the plastic would look better if abused.

Shoot with it.

Yeah, shoot the yellowpages. I bet it'll go through at least 8 of them taped together. We found out that 9mms will only go through 4 Charlotte yellow pages, but we shot at 8 yellowpage phonebooks taped together with a 7.62x51 round and we couldn't find where it went. We found the entry hole but couldn't figure out where it went. It wasn't in the 8 phonebooks though. We shot it from about 20 yards away.

Underfolder is the way to go IMO.

Also, Tapco is selling a AK side folder based off the Galil stock.

Get a Mosin Nagant 91/30 for about $80 and a Kar98 for around $150 and play war games in your back yard!

A few quality guns rather than a bunch of cheap ones.

I'm migrating towards that myself, I'm looking at a $900 Rohrbaugh instead of its <$300 Kel-tec equivalent.

Well, I could list my arsenal but it would take some time.

Here are some of the finer guns in my collection, IMHO:

Beretta 20 gauge over/under shotgun
Colt Officer's model, .45 ACP
Para-Ordnanca LDA 7.45, .45 ACP
Smith & Wesson model 629, .44 Magnum

I have some inexpensive guns as well but I don't really see any need to add more cheap guns to my collection. I'd rather save up and get something nice. :D

But just because a gun is, shall we say inexpensive, doesn't necessarily mean it is a piece of crap.

No, but good guns are so much nicer.

I can certainly appreciate having many different guns, but I also like good stuff.

The one gun that I wouldn't compromise on would be a carry gun, quality only for that role.

Anyone know what the "gun laws" are for Virginia or could point me to a website? I've been interested in purchasing one but need to learn more first.

I guess I was thinking more of the quality surplus arms that have been coming in lately.

(And the ones that might be coming);)

Mosin Nagant? Isn't that used by the Vietcongs too? $80 is cheap, is that the show price? Kar98 for $150 is a good price too, I heard that's quite accurate too.

I stopped by a co-worker's house after work and they show me their collection. They even have a cool looking FN FAL with a sharp looking scope. That thing is heavy compare to AK's.

They invited me to the gun show in the first place, and I'm going on Saturday to spend about $800. I guess I won't be getting any ammos. I'll probably pass on the $800 Romanian "Dragunov" and get the other cheaper rifles to start my collection, and execise my right to bare arms. :D

I can understand that.

Though, I do have a Ruger I picked up for $275 that I would trust my life to.

Mosin Nagant is a Russian riflewhich was in service since 1891. The ammo it's chambered for 7.62x54 rimmed cartridge is still in service to this day with SVD, PKM, and couple other guns. There are several variants you likely find at the show, the original 1891 model, pre-1938, with a hexagonal receiver and a plain front post sight. 91/38 model (1938) has a rounded receiver and a shorter barel with a hooded fron sight. There is a 1910 model carabine which is somewhat rare. Finally, there is a M1944 model carabine with a folding hexagonal bayonet attached which can be found in new or like new condition. This particular model was also manufactured in Poland and Bulgaria after WWII. Any of those models can be found for under $100.00. I personally own two: 1903 year model with now archaic "arshin" measurement sights and a 1938 year rifle which in addition to Tula arsenal markings has Finnish military SA markings indicating that it was captured by Finns during the Winter War and pressed into service.

Yup :D These guns are easy to maintain and virtually indestructible. Makes a good hunting rifle too due to it's caliber, good accuracy, and smooth trigger. They were built to be soldier-proof. I remember my grandfather telling me how when he was in WWII, he and his buddis would dump their semi-auto (some full auto) SVT's in favor of MN at first chace..

Interesting. I knew the SVTs had some reliability problems but I didn't think they were that bad.

I currently have 12 mosins myself (I think  ). The only remarkable ones are a 1897 Tula Finn M39 and a Tula M44.

So if you MN fans were to select a model for a deer rifle, restock, scope, etc, what would you suggest?
