So life throws a curve ball at me...

Today, I came home without a job. Let that be your lesson. Never Ever trust Corporate America!

So to give you a bit of details...my position was eliminated due to reorg. I've witnessed three rounds of layoff during my short time with the company. Each one was painful to watch as I felt some really bright people deserved to stay.

I was fortunate enough to survive the first two but not the third. To their credit, they shook things up pretty well...my manager was moved to another group and the director who summoned me to his office was later laid off....such is life.

So guess who is in the job market now? My performance review has been good. I can relocate...SF, Seattle and DC being the preferred locations. Not a CS guy, got my MBA and CPA and experiences in financial housing industry. I can always use some help in time like this. Anyone wants to earn an employee referral fee? Just PM me.

After the first round I would have been throwing out resumes. But anyway, good luck to you.

Even better would be before any layoffs. I'm comfortable and happy in my current position but I still have my resume out there, always gauging how much my job is worth, and where at.

Sorry to hear about your job OP. Between those three cities I would pick Seattle. I used to work in DC and the commute alone took up 3 hours of my day.

That happen to me 5 years ago. Don't take it personally. They usually do things in stages so it won't make the 5 o' clock news and so consuls are in place before people start jumping off bridges.

It took them about 3-4 years after they let me go to actually shut down the entire facility. So when I thought I was just being singled out was in actuality just one piece of exit strategy before they closed the entire R&D division down. The only people who were saved were the ones who could relocate 1500 miles away without the guarantee of stability, or the ones who could move into corporate sales and that were not too many.

It's not about which city I'd rather pick but which city would give me a job first. 😉 Since I am currently in DC, I am biased to say DC stands the best chance. However, I am ready to follow wherever the opportunity is. The advantage of being single...

Sorry to hear that. Seems companies these days are so aggressive with constantly wanting to do reorgs, and it's always a scary time. I've been through a few, and another one is about to happen and I have a bad feeling about this one.

I'm really not sure what I'd do if I lose my job, there's really nothing in tech here, I got lucky with the job I have. I'd probably have to change industry.

You're young and will adapt. Actually being laid off would be the best thing for you before you get old and have to change trades while you're in your 40s. Depending on any corporation so much will bite you in the ass. I saw it coming at my last job and instead of waiting around for a lay off I got started in truck driving and laid them bitches off.

The problem is having to start all over. Pension, etc... Not to mention I'd probably have to sell the house which I've worked hard on and am well established. Need to start my own gig on the side, but my current company has conflict of interest clauses, so it's kinda iffy. Basically you can't do anything that could compete, and anything you create on your own time is legally owned by the company, so lets say I make some really cool phone app that gains popularity and I make money off it, they could take it away from me. Though I guess as long as I don't make it linkable to me such as have my name on it I would probably be ok. They're not going to look at every single phone app or other project online and try to see if it's one of their employees that made it. I need to learn mobile app development, probably my best bet. Used to be able to make decent money off a popular website through advertising but everyone uses adblock these days.

Really I think these days it's pretty much the only secure way to go, have to fend for yourself and start your own thing. Companies are always looking at ways to lay off people.

Did you ever think about doing something different?

My sister worked in a lab at Boston University. She was laid off this past winter. She already had a little programming experience, but she wanted to go all the way. She took classes in programming at Boston U and, this Spring she landed a job as a programmer at a small company doing cloud based storage for businesses. It's only a temp job, but she's getting paid $26, works at home, and she's getting valuable experience. They love her! She hopes to find a full time job in the winter.

WTF is the "financial housing industry"?

My guess - he worked for Fannie, Freddie, or FHA or something along those lines.

OP - look into Ocwen or one of those shops, that or switch it up and get into consumer/commercial loans. A company like Springleaf should be pretty good to get into considering they are growing (although getting out of mortgages).

PMs responded. You guys are great!

I am guilty of giving the impression that I can just pack up and go anywhere. I do have friends and contacts here in DC. However, if the opportunity is right I am ready to make that choice.

Good luck man. Greetings from NW DC.
I am afraid my contacts are mostly all in European and US government orgs. The former usually require foreign language fluency and the latter are hard for anyone to crack.

Hey, good to see DC people coming out.

Not thinking about government jobs. Last I heard, they are almost impossible unless you know someone inside.

I worked for OCWEN (New Company, Backwards). Did some of the biggest loan sales in history in my 20's 🙂

Yeah, I can prove it with the trophies from those jobs.

They have grown a lot and expanded, I also work with Altisource and their other companies.

People don't like them, but they are a good company.

Hey, look, attention whoring in *another* thread. Surprise. Just stop now, we aren't here to discuss you and I would appreciate if you didn't do it any more.

Just honest and relevant since I have actually worked for them.

They are confidential (I remember now when I posted them originally someone told me about it way back then), the deals closed on Oct 10, 1996 and June 26, 1998.

Over a Billion Bucks!

So stop attacking me.

Just zip your lip.

STFU.

buttercup.

Yes, because we all need to hear about your bullshit fake sales records and trophy stories used as a recommendation of a company. God you're a fucking piece of shit, it never ends.

I am being honest. I was the one that replaced their lawyers on the road at times to do these deals.

Believe me or not it's fine.

I knew the Erby's pretty well, especially John (RIP) and his wife. They hired me as a temporary and during that same time I took over their vault, wrote some database stuff and improved the process.

That bankrolled my 20's when I had to withdraw from college because my first wife broke her neck.

Later on she also had SWAT at OCWEN in the Forum Buildings on Palm Beach Lakes Blvd next to the Palm Beach Mall (that is now an Outlet mall that is successful) because she dialed me by name and another person with my same name was working there.

I have posted about that too in the past.

I don't lie.
