But... Black Girls Code? Uh, why not just young girl code? I don't get it... Do blacks just want to segregate themselves AGAIN???

Do you think if they had a White Girls code? Club where no blacks could join in? I dunno man... The world is going backwards instead of forwards. Can't we all just get along?

If it is a verb than I don't see anything wrong with it. The more at-risk kids that are given opportunities, the better off everyone is.

Holy crap I am starting to sound like my (D) father....


Also "Black" isn't racist. Guilt-ridden white people try to tell other groups of people how they should feel about descriptors, which is actually pretty condescending in itself.

"African-American" isn't even factually correct most of the time. Most Black people are American.

White people will become enraged and try to tell Black people that they should feel offended.

The same thing happened with the Redskins controversy, the media mostly ignored the tribe that said they don't care about the name. (Personally I think that crosses a line, as "beloved patriot" was never an appropriate term that was just phased out, and I think it should go quietly)

well computers don't care what color you are. I find it interesting that she started this because her daughter didn't have any friends... Maybe she could get a few white friends or Asian friends? Or black friends? Or any friends? Damn, why does it have to be all black? Why can't we just have an "ALL" friend code? I don't get it.

So White or Asian kids can't be at-risk kids? At risk for what? I am sorry but equal opportunity shouldn't have a color. We are all human it doesn't matter the color. It should be for the good of the people period... Not just oh... your black? Welcome! Fuck you if you're anything but!

If there is a case where a non-black person tries to join and is turned away for skin color, I support your argument.

Humans inherently gravitate towards their own kind. It is basic instinct. "Own kind" could mean almost anything, and it happens all the time. Hobbies, intelligence, national origin, and yes, skin color unfortunately.

I believe this kind of separation based on skin is not good for children to learn, and it perpetuates racial tension. However, it would be intellectually dishonest for me to say it is racist because their shirt says "black" on it, because I don't think if one said "white" it is racist either....a racist idea would have to be present as well.

I grew up in Yorba Linda, CA....where you didn't need to see anyone wearing a shirt with the term "White" on it to know what it was anyway. The separation is there even if not advertised.

And before someone tells me "OH" white kids can join ... What the hell, what white girl is gonna wanna wear a black T-shirt that says that? C'mon! I think any kid of any race other than black would have a hard time wearing that t-shirt.

Yup. I'm fine with the program up to the "black" designation. The goals are laudable, but the fine point of blackness has no point. There should be more girls of all colors getting into tech, and they should be encouraged to think and create, rather than being mindless Barbies.

I don't care enough to bitch to... Fuck if I know... Who's the white Sharpton? Do we have one?! But the program isn't as cool as it should be, and I wouldn't give a penny to them.

Create "White" whatever you want. If there is actual racism involved in whatever it is, it won't be hard to spot.

As much as I'm in agreement with the OP. I am going to say I've noticed a deficit with blacks in technology. I see more Asian and Indian influence...even Hispanic than I do African Americans in the industry. It's changed a lot in the past 5 years....but still not enough around here. Typically most of the applicants I've seen are either white or foreigners...and that's like 60/40 ratio.... To see women in technology isn't as rare, but that might be a good program to help get people interested that wouldn't normally take the initiative to even consider it as a career path.
