if you think guinness is a little too thick, try fat tire or newcastle if you can't get fat tire.

Dude, your first beer should not be a "bitter bear faced" Guiness... You need to start out on Bud Light or Miller Light.

agreed. Guinness is actually a pretty thin beer with little body and almost no hops. There are better stouts out there, and Porters are also worth thinking about instead of a Guinness.

However, Guinness has abstained from using corn and rice in their beer so its head and shoulders above anything like Miller, Coors or Bud.

How do you feel about Japanese rice ales? I think Hitachino Red Rice Nest Ale is one of the best beers I've ever had.

Guinness is a damn fine drink, you just have to be VERY careful where you get it from. Its best off the tap in Ireland since they don't pasturize it for that market. If you got it from the states make sure it is a widget can/bottle and for god sake make sure it is Irish. I had some of the worst Guinness of my life in the States until I realised that all the bad stuff was brewed in Canada!

Enjoy, just make sure it's Irish (especially since they closed the London brewary..)

Anyone have any suggestions for a novice? The only beer I've really enjoyed was Killian's Irish Red, it has distinct copper after tatse to it. I've also tried New Castle and Budweiser Select, those where okay I've also had India Pale Ale and Budlight I don't particularly care for either of those...

Any suggestions?

Oh yeah, Killians is good also. It, as well as Amber Bock, are delicious cheap beers that are GREAT if you can find them on tap. Sam Adams is also tasty on tap, and has a better flavor than 99% of American beers...

Red Stripe (Jamaican) is pretty good, as is Heineken dark and some of the Sierra Nevada brews.

Guiness is way overrated. I can't even finish a bottle of guiness it tastes so bad. I usually drink Rolling Rock, but I've recently discovered that I like Miller Light, and I just had a Newcastle the other night that was pretty good.

Beer snobs will call those beers piss water (at least Rolling Rock and Miller Light), but hey whatever floats their boat... I like being able to enjoy a cheap beer.

Storytime:

I used to HATE Guinness. I hated it so much, I honestly believed that people just said they liked it to be cool. I was a light beer kind of guy. Bud Light, Rolling Rock, Miller Lite, etc.

Then I went to England and tried it: same result.

Then I drank all of the other English beers. VERY tasty, and quite thick. I got accustomed to the wonderful beer there, and when I came back to America (after 2 weeks), I yearned for something thicker. I tried Guinness again. EUREKA! I GET IT! Now I'm an ENORMOUS fan of the stuff. I have branched out into all kinds of beers, but Guinness is still my favorite.

Moral of the story: Starting out with Guinness is not a good idea. You need to work your way up to it. I've met VERY few people that like ANY kind of beer after the first taste, and I've met even more that now love beer (older guys that drink Miller Lite all day and night) and they can't stand Guinness. I just think you'll end up like I almost did and hate it before you're ready for it.

OK, see, this is exactly what I'm talking about. You drink Rolling Rock (I'm not knocking it, just saying) and you expect to like Guinness? That's crazy. You have to work up to it. OF COURSE you don't like Guinness. When you drink a beer, you're expecting a mild taste and a light feel: Guinness is anything BUT mild or light. It's like picking up a soda you thought was Pepsi and it's actually diet Pepsi. If you really wanted to, you could get accustomed to Diet Pepsi, but you don't want to because it tastes so bad.

Don't call Guinness over-rated, just admit that it doesn't fit your taste and there's really little to no chance that you were going to like it in the first place.

It's overrated in that Guiness lovers make it out to be the greatest beer in the history of the world. It's not. And as you said, it doesn't fit everyone's taste. That's all. I'm not saying it's a bad beer (I suppose I did say it tastes bad... I should have said it tastes bad to me :)).

I'm not an inexperienced drinker or anything... I've tried a LOT of different beers, some dark some light. I always end up going back to Rolling Rock. The fact that I can it for $14 for 24 bottles isn't bad either. ;)

looked around atot
a number of people seemed to like guiness, i though, why not give it a try? even my brother, who usually doesnt like alcohol to begin with (hes a stoner) and is generally very picky about what he eats and drinks, said he loves guiness over pretty much any other drink hes had except for "a *bottle* of lambrusco" if hes in the mood for some wine.

but, i say, meh. anything else even worth trying if i end up *still* thinking this is awful? because im not seeing the taste improve too much, even without a cold.
Guiness tastes like puke mixed with piss if you ask me. Not saying its a bad beer, I just hate the taste of it. Had half of one and didn't even finish it, blech.

Give me Amstel, Corona, or Michelob any day

I used to like Corona (don't know if I still would, as I haven't had it in forever), but every time I drank even one, the acid from the lime would FVCK me up. I just can't drink that stuff. I tried it w/o the lime once... bad idea. That is a terrible beer by itself IMO. With a lime it's great.

Heh.. I drink Coors Light, so I would probably consider Guinness undrinkable.

I'm sorry. Why do you make that decision?

Heh... when I was a poor college student we used to get a six pack of Coors Light and a 12 pack of Bud Light to split between 3 guys. We'd drink the Coors Light first to take the edge off the Bud Light. :)

Like I said, it's nice to be able to enjoy a cheap beer.
