So I'm planning a trip to hawaii...

the prices on these plane tickets really boggle me and sound too good to be true...

i'm checking various websites for a may30-jun4 trip and the price per ticket ranges from about 450-$600 from various agent sites and airline sites

and then i come across hawaiin air and https://www.ata.com where their prices are freakin dirt cheap at about $300-$400 per ticket... is there a catch?

i've never been on a plane before so i just want to make sure i'm believin what i'm seein :Q

No catch. I flew ATA for the first time last year to Oahu. Price was $299 roundtrip with a package deal. ATA airplanes are extremely comfortable with leather seats and great service.

BTW, the inflight meals aren't bad either 😉
And they have TV monitors every other row and play a very recently released movie over the duration of your flight. Overall, I would say the flight was great.

hah,

you (or anyone else) recommend a good cheap (but not too trashy) hotel that's close to the beach? like sub 75$/night?

hah i've been doing my research and that hotel seemed like an awesome value until i found out you had to be part of the military 🙁.

right now i'm lookin into

1) Radisson Hotel Waikiki
2) Waikiki Beachcomber

i'm particularly lookin for a hotel that's close to the beach as i plan to do a lot of swimming. it'd be nice if it were close to everything else too...

depends what you want to do. feel free to toss me a PM for anything you want to know about. that silly ROTC1983 has only been on the island for a few years. I've been here all my life 😛

Couldn't stand Oahu myself when I went. Way to commercialized and metropolitan. It was ok to see Pearl Harbor and Honalulu for a day though.

I enjoyed Maui much more. Everything seems way more laid back there.

Wish I can visit the other islands someday.

ok since i've never flown on a plane or gone outta the country, i've never renewed my passport. Do i need to renew my passport if iwant to go from lax to hawaii? or are passports for international flights only?

Blah. Glad you left Oahu. We don't want you here anyway. Well yah we do. LOL! You just gotta know what to do when you come here. Can't really do all the touristy things on Oahu.

so what do you suggest 🙂 ? i'm open to all kinds of things. i heard there are some cool clubs there.

I throw parties once a month at a club called Venus. Other than that Reign is always good. Ocean's is good, Noblesse, and um Pipelines.

There's a lot of good clubs and bar's here.

The ATA flight will depend on the plane you get. If you are on 757-200, expect a long painful flight. If it is a newer 757-300, you will be fine. The 757-300 has more legroom, better IFE, everything. I dont know what plane they fly to Hawaii, though.

As for food, ATA is a low cost carrier, and therefore, doesn't serve food, so plan on bringing some on the flight, it is long and not very interesting, unless 2000 miles of water is your thing 😀

Since Hawaii is a state, you do not need a passport.

Did you ever get to Kaneohe, Haleiwa, Kailua?

When I went to Hawaii last summer, I stayed at the Aston Circle. It's not all that but it's right off the beach and it's pretty cheap. Just watch out for the hookers late at night 😛 They try to get everyone and anyone...and you'll know who they are 😉

thanks all for answering my questions. i have one more question:

do you folks recommend that I rent a car, or should i take the bus route (no way i'm paying $25 a ride for taxi 😀isgust😉

i hope to get the most outta oahu

what ever you do, do not stay at the continential surf hotel in Waikiki. I stayed there because it was a sub $75 place. There was no hot water in the shower (it was either luke warm or cold), the first night i found sand in my bed, the little fridge / freezer had some brown ice cubes in the ice cube trays someone left. Only good thing it was like a block away from the beach and it was in the heart of waikiki.

thanks for starting this thread. I tried resurrecting an older hawaii thread and everyone kept answering the OP's questions from months back. 😀

Anyway, since you're almost done here... (and I had some of the similar questions)...

How do we decide about the hotel and island hopping ? We want to visit Oahu and Maui for sure but how do we book the hotel for this - what's the easiest/most common solution ? How much are inter-island flights and do we have to book that in advance (like now) also ? And we'd like to know about needing a car also... we plan to be there (2 or 3 islands) for our 2 week honeymoon in Sept.

Hawaii is too complicated... we were about to head to Liberty Travel and get them to do all the planning for us..

Try using Orbitz.com I always find what I'm looking for at a some what decent rate. I've been using them to book most of my travel activities.

That's what I did on my trip to Hawaii. I stayed at the Royal Lahaina hotel in Maui the hotel was alright. The service is kind of slow but it's right off the beach. We rented a car in Maui; you'll definitely need that to get around.

Liberty Travel did all the interisland flight booking for us so all we had to do was show up. Hope this helps.

Everything is slower in Hawaii, that's just the way it is.

Dammit, how am I supposed to be able to concentrate on work and my finals when you folks keep talking about Hawaii!? 😀

Cheers,
