Haven't booked a single thing.. was hoping Liberty Travel can help us out since they should be passing on the cost to the hotel, etc. instead of us... right ?

The worst part of planning a trip to HI is that we have no idea when we should book the hotel UP TO... since we are likely island-hopping... :| How do you guys deal with island hopping and booking around it ?

one thing... dont island hop too much, you'll get burnt out. there is so much to do on each island, its hard to get more than 2 in in 2 wks. plus, if you dont do everything you want, thats a perfect excuse to go back for your first anniversary!

Island hopping is pretty expensive. It is now $200 a round trip ticket, makes it kinda expensive to get home to the big island.

well we hit liberty travel yesterday and a trip to Kauai (4 days) --> Maui (7 days) including car, hotel, airfare is about $4500. This was with $250+/night hotel prices at 4 star hotels like Sheraton. The 5-star Hyatt went up to $6k.

I'm thinking we can hit a 3-star hotel via Priceline and do < $200 per night and book everything else individually... think it'll save us some cash ? Think 3-star hotels are sufficient ?

EDIT>>> 5 star resorts reportedly being had on priceline for < $200/day.

Those who've been there... can you state approx. how much you spent total and how many days ? I'm starting to wonder if saving $500 or so by doing individual deals is even worth the effort. I mean... if 10 days will cost approx $4k anyway... I may as well take the packages...

to me, yes. we look at it as saving that money we can use it somewhere else in our vacation.
i dont know if i would go with a travel agent though. so many great internet deals!

man I spent practically all day piecing together parts of our trip... and I'm glad I did cause I'm saving a ton of cash compared to liberty travel...

$120/day for Radisson Kauai (4 nights)
$170/day for Hyatt Maui (7 nights) (liberty wanted $355/day - thanks Priceline)
~$1400 American Airlines (2 people)
~$200 inter-island flight (ouch)
$50/day convertible (as recommended by others)

comes out to under $4k and we even got nicer hotels. Saweeeet... but I never worked so hard for a vacation before. 😉 Can't wait to get there.
