I don't care for long road trips, driving or as a passenger. Too much sitting. My friend just was razzing me over the holidays for paying to fly somewhere that could be driven in 13 hours. I used to drive it but even then I split it over two days. I can't maintain peak alertness for that many hours of driving.

i try to avoid trips longer then 6-7 hours... even then, it's pushing it for me... but i have had a couple lengthy trips
-dc metro area to miami was about 18ish hours (went there in college, when maryland went to the orange bowl)
-tampa to dc metro area was about 14ish hours (when i bought a car and drove it back)

and i have one coming up, that I am sort of dreading... from dc metro area to houston texas... mainly because i'll be towing my car all the way, for a race down in texas

If I have a long drive I usually start in the morning (6-7) and then stop before it gets too dark... usually around dinner time. Any more than that and I wouldn't trust myself. This was when I drove from Denver to South Bend, IN.

I don't like airports though, so honestly if I can get there in one trip I'd rather drive it.

we left monday night, got there thursday morning, .

PFFT that's nothing what you complaining about

Brother and I did Orlando FL to Reno NV in under 3 days

Left Friday at midnight, got there Sunday evening around 6 ish

~2800 miles in under 48 hours

Bunch a candy asses in here. I drove from Honalulu to Jersey City w/o stopping to piss. The road a mess, frickin' hydroplaning the whole way. Last time I buy Arivas.

Used to do Jacksonville Florida to Springfield Virginia on 3 day weekends when I was in the Navy in a VW Beetle. That trip is a lot easier now that it is interstate the entire way.

Interesting , I like to start around 9pm and drive all night. Not too much traffic and empty freeways. Drive on till 11am and then sleep for a few hours [Mostly I reach end destination by then]

I've done the Washington DC to San Jose (>3000 miles by southern route) and back twice back when I was young. 🙂

It's not bad if you plan your trip and take breaks every three hours or so.

I've also done San Jose to/from Seattle (~850 miles).

I've done central IL to Phoenix about half a dozen times. That was about 1800 miles. 14 hours one day, about 12 the next.

No biggie.

I've done that drive several times. Never again. It was horrible. Especially driving through NM is ungodly boring.

Gotta agree, I did Buffalo to OKC and back to Buffalo after wards a few years back, and nope... never doing it again.

Me too. That way you can do the boring parts, night driving, when you're more alert. When you're more tired later on, you're in different, if not interesting, areas.

As far as endurance goes, when I moved from NY to MS, I had a 14' truck and full car carrier. I went from Kingston, NY to Picayune, MS driving that beast at 55 mph. It took around 23 hours. I slept, unloaded the truck, took a nap, and drove it back up (sans car) another 23 hours straight.

So I drove 46-48 hours out of about 56. It was... joyous.

Made up my mind to get out of my rut,
Going To California with an aching in my butt
Someone told me there's a girl out there
With love in her eyes and no license for driving impaired

That was lovely.

A little unsubtle, but I was entertained anyway.
