so i'm never, ever, driving from Dallas to California again.

there was times. i thought my ass was literally being bitten by a million fireants at once (from circulation to it being cut off for so long)

we left monday night, got there thursday morning, i had to be back yesterday, so i only got one night to really party while i was there....but i had a blast anyway! the plane ride was uneventful back into DFW.....

but i reiterate again. that drive SUCKED. it's a form of torture.

I drove from Newnan, GA to San Diego, CA. Only stopped for gas and a few times for food / bathroom. I should have been busted for ridiculously excessive speeds...but I guess I was lucky.

Anyway, the seats of the rented pickup truck were amazingly comfortable. I was expecting it to be as you described (torturous), but it was actually quite pleasant. I was the only one authorized to drive the truck, so I couldn't swap with my passenger.

My brother has destroyed himself taking that trip twice on his motorcycle in an endurance situation that was even more extreme.

Made up my mind to get out of my rut,
Going To California with an aching in my butt
Someone told me there's a girl out there
With love in her eyes and no license for driving impaired

Yep. More than twice the distance on a buzzing Ninja 250 scoot in one shot with no sleep. Would have easily qualified for Iron Butt Coast2Coast if I had logged it.

I still have nightmares about those assquitoes. Combine it with dehydration and exposure and sweat and you get what motorcyclists call "Monkey Butt."

Yeah 12 hours is about the safe limit unless you high on crack cocaine that is.

Anything more your brain has a hard time making the right decisions. Not only that you have a greater chance at developing a dvt in your leg. But fun.

also did ohio to florida once, 24 hours straight

Used to do Indiana to Florida on a pretty regular basis, even back in the 70's, in about 18 hours non stop.

When I moved down here in 1990 was a pretty epic road trip, me and my cat at the time in a little U-Haul, loaded with all my stuff, and a Beretta GT with a bent car towing hitch on the back of it.

I was leaving town, funny thing was one of the guys I played with in a band called me the same night, he'd been away a few years and was back in town as I was leaving it.

Wonder what Glen is up to these days, I got in that thing after leaving last day of work that afternoon and it had just started snowing and I pulled out.

Only hitch they had at the time I just used it, the damned car was tracking off center about 2 feet all the way down, and had the cat on the front seat in a carrier next to me, feeding him tranquilizers the vet gave me about every 6 hours.

Small mew, mew, mews the whole trip but he loved it once he got here and lived another 10 years.

Going through Atlanta during rush hour in the morning was interesting with 18 wheelers going by like a bat out of hell, I just plunged on.

Getting to Tampa and hitting the Courtney Campbell on the way to Clearwater without an incident was a good feeling that night and day.

That was a real just grit your teeth and do it trip.

I wouldn't do it again because anything east of Albuquerque through like Tennessee sucks major donkey balls. Western Texas is a horrible fetid wasteland and driving through it is a painful drone.

When I moved to Tucson from Cheyenne I had two cats in the cab of the rental truck. One cat was pretty cool about it and only complained if the road was particularly rough. The other squalled non-stop the entire trip.

Did you get lost? Cleveland (Northern close to center of Ohio) to Daytona Florida is under 15 hours.

And Google Maps is showing Dallas to Sacramento as 25 hours driving. 3 days to get there as the only driver? Did you get lost too?

Longest drive I've done was 1200 miles from home to Oklahoma, spent a few hours there to take a nap & pick up goats, and turned around and drove 1200 miles back home. Took turns with the wife; made the trip in a weekend.

The OP took a different rout to avoid snow, this adds about 110 miles to the trip plus it forces you to drive through L.A and not around L.A, which can add even more hours of driving.

Longest day for me was 900 miles (Columbus to Glenwood, MN). The issue was 3 adult smokers and a baby. No smoking in the vehicle, so there were a number of stops. I was ready for that day to end.

Everyone keeps talking about Atlanta, and every time, I'm either yawning, wondering why the car infront of me in the carpool lane is so "slow" at 65-70 or everything is stopped for a few miles.
(I don't love city driving, but I did learn to drive around Chicago, so I just go into high-alert video game mode and it's OK)

More stressful is something like driving down winding mountain roads, passing semis, in the minivan, like from Lake Tahoe to Sacremento.

I once drove from Badlands National Park to Seattle, via Mt. Rushmore, as the only driver. 24 straight hours behind the wheel, LOTS of snow on the roads. I don't recommend it.

Your earlier thread about this drive prompted me to reflect on a road trip I participated in earlier this year. The resulting blog post is here. Intended to put a link to that in your earlier thread, but never did.

Longest drive I have ever done was from Spokane, Washington to Shreveport, Louisiana. It was about 2,200 miles and it took 39 hours down and 41 hours back (got bad gas at the Cenex in Wheatland, Wyoming on the way back). That averaged out to 56 MPH down and 53 MPH back, which isn't bad considering the national speed at the time was 55. We made good time in Montana...lol!

I drove most of it with my wife taking over when I got too tired to drive. We did the trip there and back over a five day period.

n fact the whole state felt like that... it's a LONG state, at least once past LA it was a much nicer drive, went through countless little towns and a few bigger ones i dont remember the names of mostly, lots of spanish names, and i remember modesto and oh "los banos," that one sticks out...it means "the bathrooms" in spanish :)
Damn you drove right by me, about 20 miles south of Modesto. That drive from Bakersfield to Stockton is pretty bleak in terms of scenery, the whole Central Valley is meh....

I used to drive 1,000 miles from Missouri to Ohio, I think that is my near max for tolerability or sanity.
