And i have to say, they sure did make this pretty darn easy for my first linux install...

Installing YDL v5 on the stock 60gb hd, which i hope to replace soon with a 120gb+ drive.

I dunno if OT is appropriate for this, as its a combo of OS, General Hardware, and a Game System :)

Eh, you're good. By the way, I thought you made the decision to buy the 360 instead?

Well, the coupon i had from TRU ended up being 25% off everything you purchase at that one time, not just for one item, so i bought a 360 (w/ HD) and a 60gb PS3. Started off with the 360, and while i definitely liked how integrated everything was, the music playback and photo viewing interface sucked (which was one of my primary concerns), reminded me of using an XP box. I also didn't care for Gears of War as much as I had hoped.

Opened up the PS3, and while it has its quirks, i was much happier with the music playback and photo viewing capabilities, plus the GT HD Demo got me hooked :)

I agree with the 360 music and video interface sucking, but using Media Center makes that a little better if you have a capable PC on the network. Are you thinking of getting Live subscription?

No media center, my only "desktop" is a mac mini, laptop is a IBM T41. I bought a live subscription, but ended up selling it to my friend (i only paid $38). I was using the free month trial and was impressed, but the music/photos killed it for me.

I'll be doing the same once they get the WiFi working.. or I get tired of waiting and figure out how to directly connect the ethernet port to my PC and share the internet connection.

Ok, did you kill basic ps3 functionality by doing this? Or can you switch back and forth from your linux install to the regular PS3 os?

You can switch back and forth. Nothing is lost by doing this other than some HDD space.
