I'll buy another wireless adapter if need to, but I've yet to see drivers that support linux, more specifically ubuntu.

Is it a centrino?
Ubuntu supports it natively, the 2100 and the 2200 versions.

Intel's wireless is generally crap with free systems. They don't care about their customers. Find an RALink based adapter. I got a D-link G-122 (Hardware rev. B1), and it works great.
