And I asked about their Affirmitave Action plan..

What is your AA plan?
The corporate HR department is responsible for establishing our Affirmative Action plan. Legal would not allow me to give much specific information on the plan. However the plan is created by looking at each respective job category and title determining the availability of the protected groups in the work area and looking at the demographics of the people currently in those postitions. With that information it is then determined if we are in compliance or if a protected group is underutilized in that area. We keep information on all applicants and the dispostion of their application. There are also about 10 minority referral agencies that we used in order to ensure the applicant pool is diverse.
What do you think about that?

Do you have a problem with their AA plan? Doesn't seem like a problem to me...

Though, if I were interviewing a minority candidate and he asked me about the affirmative action plan, alarms would be raised because it would seem like said candidate would be more likely to cause problems for the company..

yeah having someone ask about the AA plan i would wonder why they want to know? are they afraid they can't get teh job without it? are the skills they have sub-par?

to many questions get raised with it.
i wanta confidant and qualified (hell even a little cocky) person. If i am hireing someone it is because i need someone to help make me money. So i want the most qualifed (regardless of color) peson i can find.

Exactly! Why even ask?

I think OP was interviewing the HR flack, not interviewing for a job.

That said, said HR flack's description is disconcertingly vague and quite unhelpful. The invocation of "legal" as a reason for not providing information is also less than encouraging. Maybe I'm just not sufficiently experienced with contemporary corporate jargon; but the whole thing looks like a mass of cagey CYA weasel speak.

Would you expect something different?

Yeah right there you mark yourself as a liability to the company. Next time I'd recommend using your head before you open you mouth...

since they aren't allowed to force employees to report their ethnicity, i'd like to know just how they are able to tell if a "protected" group is under-utilized.

Oh how I hate AA.

We had diversity training a while back and the woman actually told us that if a white man and a black man applied for the same job, we should hire the black man, regardless of qualifications. Now tell me, which person is racist?

I agree with you 100%. I am glad that the voters of Michigan decided to do away with Affirmitave Action.

Why can't they just leave race out of it, and hire someone based on his/her/it's qualifications only?

Some softy feels that certain sex/races have not had the ability to develop qualifications equally and need to have a hand up.

If all things being equal, then let the softy win if desired; however do not cripple the system by placing unfair restrictions on the postiion because of sex/race.
