Yes, some people get reactions from MSG, pretty much the same way people get reactions from plaecebo. If you think you get reactions from MSG, oh well, no one is forcing you to eat it. I just think it's dumb some of the claims people make and wild theories they have. They've gone so far as to dub it "Chinese Restuarant Syndrome" for the effects of MSG. Some of the claims are really out there.

As for the person that eats at all sorts of resturaunts, there is just way to many ways to get headaches from stuff that has nothing to do with food. It could be all those buildings you went in had something in the paint in the walls that you are allergic to. Many the workers or hostess are wearing a perfume that are causing headaches. I used get this time to time from coworkers in some really bad past jobs I've worked at. It could be something as simple as the soap the use, or the water harshness or the pipes in that part of the city. You can't blame MSG based off the fact you eat at a restuarant that uses MSG and you get headaches there but not at another one that doesn't use MSG. Making a blanket statement like that is dumb.

its okay :) all that stuff you said is totally true. those reactions could be caused by ANYTHING!!!!!

That would be a hilarious thread to see :D

MSG is not bad. I am not sure where people get that idea. I bet alot of the problems people have with chinese food is due to the salt. I don't feel like rehashing alot of what HumblePie has already covered.

dont they test like 100 people or something and each thing that goes wrong, even if it is only with 1 person, has to be listed?

yeah but MSG is a flavor enchancer, apparently it "tricks" your brain into thinking food tastes good? so i do'nt think its added to the ingredients list.

It's listed in every food that has it. Lola is very sensitive to MSG and gets very sick when she eats it.

oh really i didn't know they listed it, learn something new everyday :) cheers iamwiz

It's one of the top ingredients in Doritos.

Wrong, on my bag of Cool Ranch Doritos it's ingredient number 13, half way down the list. Not saying it's good for you, but it's not near the top. Thankfully I don't really care about it at this time so I will enjoy my doritos now

And those symptoms are very common - more common than what you'd find a hundred years earlier - and now all our food contains it. Hmm...

MSG naturally occurs in many foods. Tomatoes have a significant amount of MSG and parmesan cheese has more MSG in it than anything else naturally occuring. If you eat pasta with tomato sauce and parmesan cheese just fine, most likely you do not have a problem with MSG. I don't know about other people, I have no problems with it myself.

Take a look at this quote from :

http://www.foodandhealth.com/cpecourses/msg.php

The average American consumes at least 5,000 to 10,000 mg of GLU daily even if all the foods and beverages they consumed had no added MSG. By contrast, the average American consumes only a few hundred milligrams of glutamate daily as added MSG.

Indeed, I've never been able to understand the fuss about MSG, because, all it is is partially digested protein. Moreover it's a very common component of protein, with the amounts that occur naturally in food exceeding the amounts added by factors of tens to hundreds.

Similarly, an allergy to MSG is impossible, because it is an essential naturally occurring nutrient which occurs in all foods, and is permanently present in the body naturally at high concentration.
