So I started The Shield

i loved how it ended. i actually hated it at the time because i did not want it to end, but the more and more i thought about it, the more and more i liked it. it was TOTALLY not what i expected, and it caught me off guard and was just not the happy ending everyone expected. so i was glad it ended like that in the end.

one thing i can say too, if i could only pick 1 season to watch between BB and the shield, it would be the shield for sure. maybe it is because BB is fresh in my head, but i don't know, either way i'd pick the shield.

Yeah, the ending was fitting to me. I got a co-worker into it and when she finished she came in the next day saying that the end was good but not great. I tried to explain my take on the ending
In the end Vic walks away with nothing. No friends, no Family, not really a cop even. He IS nothing. For all that he did, nothing came out in the end
and she agreed that made more sense to her.

I loved Breaking Bad, but not as much as The Shield. Of all the new "gritty" style drama TV shows on AMC/FX/ETC. The Shield really was the beginning of the genre. Some might attribute that to NYPD Blue, but I still think The Sheild was the door opener to these other shows.

i also believe the shield is where they started using "shit" on cable tv. i don't recall any other shows on non-premium using that word regularly until the shield. now you see it all over fx shows and other shows.

Sorry to turn this into a BB vs The Shield thread but BB does start out slow. Maybe try again next year and watch season 1, it's totally and absolutely worth it! It does start to pickup then you get hooked.

The Shield>Breaking Bad>The Wire Season 1>Justified>The Rest of the Wire

WTF have you been smoking?

The Wire > all

The wire...the shield...B.B.

You are splitting hairs...these shows are the top of their class...anyone who says otherwise is a fool!

WTF have you been smoking?

The Wire > all

Those last two seasons of The Wire really brought it down, with the exception of the Omar/Marlo story line.

This indeed. I don't understand how people think the show dropped off after season 3. The social commentary doesn't complete its arc without the last two seasons and the show is only great commentary on the drug war. Well rounded characters instead of characters are just the icing on the cake.

I've read through the Breaking Bad thread and watched the show in it's entirety and that one I simply don't understand the lavish praise for. I didn't want to thread crap a praise thread so this might be a good place to bring it up. It wasn't bad and there was clearly inspiration from The Wire, but it seemed like a cartoonishly dramatic take on drugs. Much of it seemed like it was roided up tension for the sake of tension.

I have made it to season 5 ep 10, my opinion hasnt changed. It is ok and has stayed pretty consistent from the get go but not like all the hype I had read online.

If a gangbanger making Aceveda give him a bj and recording on a cell phone didn't sell you, I don't know what will.

I didnt say it was bad or didnt like it, I just dont think it is the end all of shows like a lot off the internet claims. I think it is good or I certainly wouldnt have watched through most of season 5. His wife is still one of the worst characters on tv

As per the OP The shield is one of those shows I watched because there was nothing better on TV.

Its not going to get significantly better but you'll probably still watch it anyway like I did, lol. Their ratings were probably 100% the "nothing better on TV" demographic.

Yeah, I agree about the wife. I have some suggestions for you. Two sets of two shows that came out at the same time with similar themes, and all only went one season.

Criminal themed:

Thief (2006)
Smith (2006)

Smith in particular was pretty good. Starring Ray Liotta, Virgina Madsen, Simon Baker (The Mentalist) and Jonny Lee Miller (Elementary).

Time Travel:

Day Break (2006)
Journeyman (2007 - 2006-2007 TV season)

But between Deadwood and Justified, I'd pick Deadwood since its finished. Justified will probably go on for some time.

The Wire was very, very real. People who dislike the show after season 3, just wanted the romanticized drama of being a drug dealer. They wanted an epic struggle over a city like what happened in Chicago during prohibition. That's what Breaking Bad is, an epic story with phenomenal acting.

I just finished the episode where Shane
tells his wife he killed Lem, pretty good. Vick will kill him when he finds out
