I'd sooner become a male hooker for STD positive homosexuals than have ANYTHING to do with a neocon professionally (except to oppose them to my dying breath).

Furthermore, as a high school teacher I doubt seriously if that suggestion has any relevance to my future whatsoever.

Youll get far in life :)

How is this relevant? Since when did it become a competition to see who could achive the highest toolbag status? Ashcroft SUCKS, but that doesn't justify me ruining my own reputation just so I have a neat story to tell later on... a story that will probably make people think of me in a way that... well, kinda like how everyone's reponding to the OP.

Sometimes you have to play the game to make a point/difference, and playing the game usually means carrying yourself like an intelligent, rational human being. I work around people who have achieved various levels of idiocy, but when I want to make a point I don't storm into the meeting room with a "I Work With Douchebags" t-shirt on. I beat them with facts and reason while maintaining control of my temper and tone.

The people that come unglued in these settings are the ones that look like idiots, regardless of who is actually supported by fact and morals.

So he sits there and does nothing? It is a sad day when a free American is not allowed to voice their opinion. Have you ever heard that all that is necessary for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing. I say if this guy feels so strongly about it he has a DUTY to say something.

There's a difference between voicing your opinion and acting like a fool and disrespecting those that invited you to a very exclusive dinner and the guest of that dinner.

Have you ever heard of a middle ground? Who here is saying "say nothing... sit there and be silent"? Who said that? Is there nothing between "Go in there with an 'If I could kill you I would' t-shirt on" and "kiss his buttcheeks"? Maybe you should pay more attention when you read.

Doesn't sound like I've implied or suggested silence to me...

You can voice your opinion without being a total jackoff. This is what so many people fail to recognize. They lack confidence in either their message or their ability to deliver it, so they instead resort to childish and immature tactics. When you act like a flamboyant tool, you are immediately categorized as a lunatic by most people and you are tuned out and not taken seriously. I know it's real posh to walk around with the whole "I don't give a fsck what you think" attitude, but it's pretty difficult to make an impact on society when you're a laughing stock or thought of as an extremist... left OR right.

You're missing the point but I'm not surprised given the level or irrational hatred many seem to have towards Ashcroft.

You can ask a pointed question or make a poignant statement without making an ass out of yourself, the person that invited you and the University. I would think this would be especially clear here since Ashcroft is no longer in any sort of position of power in the government.

Part of the problem with political discourse today is the irrational and lunatic acts that some seem to think they need to pull off in order to get noticed. All they end up doing is marginalizing themselves and their cause.

OT, where the liberal circle jerks of P&N are cast aside in favor of gargantuan conservative circle jerks.

Aside from the general conservative slant of many of the posters, there are also the large number of passive-agressive internet loudmouths, who got where they are in real life by kissing ass and being a team player. They remain unfufilled from lives spent bottling up what they really want to say, and make their one true vent ATOT. Everything goes smoothly and they are in complete charge of the situation until someone comes along who seems like everything the internet loudmouth wishes he was in real life. Faced with somebody who as actually speaking his mind and standing by his convictions, the internet loudmouth flies into a berserker rage, flaming the poster with the help of the rest of his ilk. They then commence to make threads about their sunuvabitch brother-in-law and how he's treating my sister like sh|t and spending all their money and he doesn't have a job and he's on welfare but has a Porsche and he pisses on the toilet rim and I'd really like to go tell him what he really is but he'd probably get mad and yell at me and my sister says she loves him and they have kids and 24 is on tonight.

You sound like a little boy. I encourage you to give Ashcroft a hard time with your political rhetoric and show him just how wrong he has been. I wish I was a fly on the wall because the guy is going to chew you up, spit you out, and make you feel good about it.

Pissing off idiots who think that volume and repetition is synonymous with critical thought (and as you say, this goes equally for both parties) is always a good thing.

Don't say something stupid. It pisses me off when some dumbass college student asks a question he thinks is smart, when in reality it's obvious that he's a clueless idiot who happens to be liberal. That happened at some speech I went to, but I can't remember who it was.

Personally, I'd go for wearing the toothbrush moustache and saying "Guten Abend, mein Fuhrer!" when you see him.

But that might not be entirely appropriate for the situation.

(I'm conservative. Ashcroft is anything but.)

I'd sooner become a male hooker for STD positive homosexuals than have ANYTHING to do with a neocon professionally (except to oppose them to my dying breath).

Furthermore, as a high school teacher I doubt seriously if that suggestion has any relevance to my future whatsoever.

Definitely go with the statement thing. That way you have a story to tell all of your loser students for years to come. With any luck, you'll steer them in your direction, which means less competition in the real job market for the rest of us.

Would that be the 'real market' where you produce nothing, help no one, and work a lifetime only to satisfy empty materialism whle being a pawn of consumerism? Yeah, you can have that.

FTW!

Seriously though, I hope you manage to keep your obvious subjectivity out of your teaching and let the kids form their own opinions.

I side mostly with the critical reasoning crowd. Sure there is some baseline information that everyone should be exposed to, but mostly school is to teach people to think, and how to reason. What they do with that ability is between them and their diety.

HS teacher? *holds in laughter*

?

Because of the career you chose, your future has pretty much hit a dead end.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH, what an idiot. Forgive me for having a mind outside capitalist comprehension. I've wanted to teach since I was 16, mostly because I was lucky enough to have some incredible teachers who made all the difference in my life...probably even saved my life in truth.

I care NOTHING for power, prominence, fame, glory, money, management, social status, etc. For me, life is about personal enrichment and what I can give/bring to others. There is no other reason to breath.

it's a shame you'll only ruin kids lives, way to repay your teachers.

Opinions vary.

Position has no bearing on ability, or rather, the other way around...as our current president and administration prove daily.

So far I'm torn with regards to Ashcroft...some things I actually support, some I think he was a tool, and others a lunatic. He's done nothing to suggest to me that he has truly exceptional intellect or debate skills however. That doesn't mean he isn't or doesn't, merely that so far I haven't seen any indications of it.
