went to applebees with the gf for some half off appetizers. I ordered a Sam Adams and she had a mango martini. We got two appetizers. Reasons I left such a crappy tip

0. got our drinks on time but...
1. we waited 30 mins for 2 appetizers. We were seated around the same time as two other tables. One were in the middle of their dinner, and other was in the process of paying when we got our food. The reason waiteress gave us was one of our appetizers vanished - she thinks it was given to someone else (but I think our order never put in fully) and she was waiting to bring both out together.
2. When we did get our food, one was cold (melted cheese on nachos had become solid again) cuz it was sitting around for the lost part of the order.
3. We sent the nachos back cuz we didnt wanna pay for cold food. Meanwhile we started eating the chicken quesadillas. Halfway thru, we had to ask for plates cuz we werent given any - even the smaller appetizer plates. Now its understandable to not give us plates if we had our own order. But the waitress saw us sharing the quesadillas and she still didnt think to give us plates.

The waitress did apologize later on, and I know the delay was probably not her fault, but she didnt make any extra effort to make up for the delay.

Oh and I wrote down on the bill aforementioned reasons as to why I left a $0.25 tip

edit: i hardly ever tip below 15%. usually between 15-18%. I didnt want to leave no tip cuz I didnt want her to think that I either forgot to tip or that I dont believe in tipping

That's definately subpar service, but I would't have left that small of a tip, especially if I felt it wasn't the waitress' fault.

Well let's see how well you do your job when you find out your dad has cancer, grandmother died, etc.

Could be more going on than just her being a lousy waitress ya know...

im sorry, but if you cant give good service because of a family issue, like unless you JUST got called and were told your father died, etc. but if it was yesterday, sorry you have a job, i cant feel sorry for you if you cant do your job, even under duress.

and this is from a server.

i woulda left her maybe $1 just maybe. or asked for everything to be taken care of

1. Probably wasn't her fault.
2. Related to 1.
3. Meh. You could havea asked.

She didn't deserve 15%, but I think she deserved more than $.25

I'd have left $2.

yea maybe it was a bit low. but I dont feel bad about it. she was avoiding us the entire time. What really pissed me off though was that she walked by 4 times and saw us sharing a meal, yet we had to get her attention and ask for plates.

Im paying for the food and service. If I wanted to just pay for the food, I could order out and forego the tip. If she cant provide the service, how can she expect payment?

And if i'd just found out that my dad has cancer or that my grandpa died, I wouldt be at work in the first place

Yea, I would've tipped a dollar or two. Usually I would leave 3, but hey... that's why we tip sub-normal sometimes, but a quarter is pushing it.

Food served cold is always 100% the server's fault. You think the cook prepared it cold?

Please don't talk about things you obviously know nothing about.

And WhoTF would want to go back to Applebees? Yuck...

at one point, yea. cuz one of our meals came out cold, so we sent it back to be reheated, or re-prepared. Instead of waiting for other meal to come out, we started sharing the appetizer that was on our table

(I work at one)

I don't blame you for your tip OP. I might have gone all out and tossed a single down, but it certainly was sub-par service. Espeicially since other tables seated around the same time as you were getting their full meals while you were still waiting on two appetizers.

i think leaving a ultra crappy tip like 1 cent or 25 cents makes more of a statement than leaving no tip at all.

The note was statement aplenty, but that's 25 cents that could have spent elsewhere. I'm a cheap and practical bastard.

Unless the waiter/waitress was a complete a$$, I'll leave a tip...especially in your situation, where the delay likely wasn't her fault. But that's just me.

well this will be a lesson for her then. if it was the case you mentioned, she needs to grow the hell up and learn that I have no way of knowing whether she's having a bad day or if she's just a lousy waitress, especially when she's never waited on me before. So all I can judge her performance on is this single event. And it was crappy

At the very least she should have had a manager at your table. No matter what went wrong, she could have salvaged your neg experience by trying to make it right. WITH THE MANAGER

But, problem or not... one of the first things I learned while being a GM was that ... manangers are supposed to sweep the dining room every so often to speak to guest. Ask how everything is and etc.

You got ****** service all around.
