CMOY is as simple as it gets for DIY, and I highly recommend Shijosae's build - a very easy to follow construction with minimal footprint and cost.

Truth be told, if you have something nicer, CMOY would most likely leave a lot to be desired. It all depends on what kinda source and cans you have. For something in the loweest end of the spectrum like V6 and audigy1/2, CMOY may suffice.

I still only want to if I will see a signficant bass improvement. My phones can get plenty loud as it is.

If all you want is sheer bass, then turning up the bass bar in your audigy is probably already pushing it. A headphone amp will give you a bass boost, but nothing more than maybe a tick or two on that bar, it's more the quality of the overall sound that headphone amps improve on. You will get more bass without sacrificing sound quality with a headphone amp, while using that bass bar probably can degrade sound quality, as you have already noticed with the distortion at high levels.

OMG! I just noticed I was getting the crackling because I had CMSS turned on! With it off, bass can be maxed with no distortion! Major w00tage!

Heck yeah, but it depends on how lossy. If you are using 96kbps, re-rip or spend that money purchasing the albums. It also depends on what headphones you are using.

For a cheap amp, I'd recommend a basic PIMETA. You can DIY for around $75 or order from a builder such as MisterX, etc. Sounds much better to my ears than a CMOY. Also, be sure to visit head-fi.org :) Headroom's amps are also great, but some (such as the basic Airhead) are kinda overpriced due to them still being manufactured by hand. The price should be going down soon, from what I hear they recently ordered a machine that automatically assembles them. BTW, anyone ever disassemble a Bithead? There is a hell of a lot of soldering going on in there :p

BTW, if anyone is wondering, I'm Saturnine from Head-Fi & Saturnine2 from teh Hard, and sorry for the zombie thread :)
