And so it has begun...

Yet another one has tasted the goodness of the quality of pre-amps and amps.

What does the amp help with? Can it help with bass? My MDR-V6s sound great without one but I'm willing to try one if it makes a difference.

They help with the sound and volume of whatever you're using...

If you are looking for bass... Find a good headphone amp :)

Well in my mind just the "sound" and "volume" doesn't really equate to bass. So would I see an improvement in bass or not? That's really the only thing I'd be interested in.

And by "good" do you mean NOT a home-built CMOY amp?

I used to own a Superdual with bass boost, made my DT770s kick nicely, but I didn't think it was worth the $150 I spent on it so I sold it. I used to dabble in that crap, but I just don't think it's worth it, sound is sound to me as long as its not pure hissing popping crap.

I imagine you could probably make one that's got a low-pass filter in it to bump up just the bass.

A decent cmoy would give those hd280s an improvement in bass. That along with a blue tak mod goes quite a ways to improve the bass response on those cans.

Okay now I'm interested. :D The phones have very deep bass when you increase bass to the max in Windows sound properties (Audigy 2), however when it's that high they tend to crackle a bit on the lows. So a good balance between level of bass and no crackling is around 75%. So would the amp allow me to put that to the max without experiencing the crackling? Or would it just increase the bass AT the same bass level it's at now?

Ok, i'm very interested.

I have a couple questions, if you wouldn't mind helping:
1. What is CMOY?
2. Can you make one yourself? I saw these at headphones.com, but they want 150 bucks for the base model and 200 for the nice one. Way too much money for me.
3. If the answer to #2 is yes, can you explain how or post a link?

Thanks!!!

That was the VERY FIRST thing I did.....after making my post. LOL.

It seems like its more expensive to buy a soldering iron and the parts than it is to just buy one.

That's like the cheapest headphone amp out there. If you can tell the difference, good for you. It'll only be a matter of time before you go out and buy those $500 portable amps. Check out the Emmeline SR-71 and HeadAmp AE-1.
