I tried several times, unsucessfully, to install the 6.3 Catalysts and ATI Catalyst Control Center.

So finally I used driver cleaner to clean up all my ATI drivers, and then uninstalled and then reinstalled .net 1.1. Then I downloaded the 6.3 package again and on the ATI Display screen a box pops up saying "service error" and I click ok.

Anyway everything else goes smoothly. I restart the system. But ATI Catalyst Control Center won't open at all. Also, when I downloaded ATItool it shows my clocks at 500/600

What's up? THis is such a pain in the ass compared to installing my 7800GT. This is a Sapphire X1900XT btw.

Thanks

You dont have to install CCC, you can just install the driver and use ATT and Atitool to adjust the advanced settings. Also, the card automatically downclocks in 2d mode, that's why Atitool reports low clock speeds.

Using the base ATi driver + ATi Tray Tools is a very good idea. ATT is a fantastic program for tweaking ATi cards.

I installed ATT, but whenever I open it I get the message "unable to retrieve information from BIOS! Please report to the developer about your board!"

Uhhh. Help?

And on ATI Tool, if it displays the 2D clocks, how do you see and change the 3d clocks?

You have to go inside the configuration file in the Ray Adams Ati Tray Tools folder and set the overclocking to off. You can do this by changing the 0 to a 1 in the file right under the overclocking text.

This will solve your problem mate.

Why would you want to overclock if you already have a super fast card? The performance increase isn't worth voiding a warranty on a $400-$500 card that already delivers super performance. Just take that card you've worked so hard to install and put it to good use. :D Congrats on the X1900XT, BTW. I got one sitting in my closet also and it's waiting to be installed.

Why do I want to overclock it? Not necessarily for the performance (that is a factor though) but more for the geekiness factor of having a $500 card overclocked.

The geekiness factor isn't worth risking a $500 card IMO. Go ahead if you want, it's your card, you can do what you like with it, I'm just suggesting not to risk $500 part and void the warranty.

First of all, if you want to install ATi CCC, I highly suggest you to get .NET Framework 2.0, it's new, official, and much faster and stable then version 1.1.

Second, I highly suggest you NOT to use CCC in the first place, UNLESS you really, really want to use AVIVO features and H.264 encoding.

Third, I suggest you, again, to use ATi Tray Tools, instead, for settings, such as A-F, A-A, and others (although over-clocking via Ati Tray Tools is not supported at the moment, you can still over-clock with ATi Tool Beta 14 or newer if any, which I myself am doing right now).

Do that, and you'll not get a single issue (provided you do everything properly).

Oh, and, if you want to give a try to ATi Tray Tools, then just download Catalyst 6.3 Display Drivers only. Not with Control Panel or CCC. Just the Display Driver, to avoid any problems.

Yup, that's what I did. But my question is: if ATI Tool displays the 2D clocks, how do I overclock the 3D clocks?

If you want to oc your card using ATI Tool (which is what most people use) than just go to Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services and disable ATI Hotkey and ATI Smart. Reboot your computer and than you can oc. Your clocks will stay permentely at 2D clocks so just remember that you'll have to raise the voltage back to stock (1.4/2.086/2.086/1.48) and than start overclocking via the sliders (remember to set the clocks after you change them).
