FEAR 1 was ok but I couldn't stand the way they would put all of those windows/glass doors along your path which were completely indestructible. So much for being uberpowerful...

They pay you to post this? lol Its a decent game. Doesn't really hold up over all these years i think..

Bit harsh. I haven't noticed the same sort of Holy Wars you get over GPUs and CPUs break out over FPS's in single-player form (maybe I haven't been paying attention), so I'd rather assume the OP just likes the game. I did too.

In fact I think Monolith are an underated and rather unlucky outfit in general (NOLF 1 and 2 were fantastic, but didn't sell, Sin was not at all bad but ruined by bugs on release and overshadowed by HL).

I liked the atmosphere and pacing of FEAR, and the AI, and the difficulty level being pitched about right, and the combat being quite satisfying, but it had its flaws - decidedly monotonous environments, and, ultimately, a plot that didn't entirely make sense (especially if you include the non-canonical sequels).

Also, how many guys does Delta Force actually have? Bit disconcerting to see what is surely an elite unit suffer casualties in droves like they do in that game.

The 7800GT and way OC'd opteron 140 handled it pretty well :)

I really liked the first few hours. The ending where things got weird didn't do as much for me, but I hate horror games so I am giving FEAR a pass on that one. It's not you... it's me... :p

If I see it cheap on Steam I may pick it up and give it another go... it is on Steam, right? I have no freaking idea where my original copy is...

*YES* - I am still waiting on Sins Episode 2. To the bean counting gods out there, I would buy it on launch. I mean, its the Source Engine and they had to have most of the game assets there - just finish it! I had a lot of fun getting wacky titles and pushing the difficulty with that one, it was short enough but fun enough that multiple play throughs seemed very much encouraged.

It was ported to 360 a year after PC release.
I know. But it was still first and foremost a PC game. The only reason why they had to wait at all to port it to the Xbox 360 was because the 360 wasn't even out when FEAR was first released. And I can't imagine how much they'd have to water it down if they were to port it to the original Xbox.

Just started working on FEAR 2. Makes me sad I can't play it at optimal settings. Keep hitting lag & turning down some setting. Lame. :(
OK so far. But where fuck is lean & quicksave dammit?! No quicksave makes me miss out on some decent photo ops...

FEAR 2 was decent game. Not as good as first game, but it wasn't bad at all. Definitely alot more experience put towards having more work done on the environments. Some excellent firefights at times. A little bit more scary in parts compared to predecessors, but they also had alot more graphical power to work with this time around. What they were lacking from predecessors, they made up for in other areas.
Made me cry inside a little, not being able to max out graphics settings, but it didn't detract from enjoyment of the game. Something I'll be playing through again on max settings, when I can get around to building a new computer...
Still would have liked my lean & quick-save though.

I didnt like FEAR, it felt like one big dull stroll through the most boring industrial complex in the world, everything is grey concrete, yuck.

Oh and that ginger guy... i say this every time a FEAR thread comes up but i should've been given the opportunity to shoot that POS, god knows he tried to kill me enough times during the game ;/

Yea, that was one of the pros I gave to FEAR 2, over 1. They did a decent job on the variety of environments.

Sin was developed by Ritual Entertainment, FYI. :)

I had to really push myself to finish FEAR. Same thing, every level. Some ghost thingy would come out and try to scare you, blah blah blah, but the never ending levels did it for me. I finished it because I paid so much for the darn game, but I ended up giving it away to my neighbor. I found zero replayability in it, but I'm glad you liked it.

I agree with BFG, but I'm afraid Monolith abandoned PC gamers with FEAR 2:thumbsdown:

I mean the MP in FEAR 2 was horrid.

The only thing that stops me from replaying fear or fear two are the graphics, they're just dated. Great games though, can't wait for 3 :awe:.

You let dated graphics stands in the way of playing great games? How pathetic.

Can current consoles even play FEAR completely maxed out?
well considering my 8600gt can run it at 90fps with everything but soft shadows on I would say easily. also FEAR 2 is much more demanding overall and it was a console game you know.

still anybody that thinks FEAR is so outdated looking that it should not be played is out of their mind. its actually still a decent looking game.

Didn't hold up well? Shens. Looked great. My favorite screenshot on most recent run-through of it's max graphical glory, not bad at all.

For those still seeking a horror-suspense itch, I'd suggest checking out the Nightmare House 2 mod: http://nh2.wecreatestuff.com/
I had alot of fun with this one, provided some nice scares. Had some decent originality, for the most part.

I remember playing it at night in the dark. There were parts where it would make me literally jump almost out of my chair it was so good. I forget the video card I used. A 8800GTS or a 8800GT perhaps? It was on a 20" 1680x1050 LCD. I remember that much. I been thinking of pulling it off the shelf and playing it again on this new rig: i5 2500k, 8GB RAM, ATI 6950, 28" 1920x1200 LCD. I bet it would look pretty good.

I'd count the original FEAR as one of the finest FPS' I've played. Thoroughly enjoyable, wooooonderful firefights, and some really lovely particles and lighting.

Your 8600 GT ran it that fast? At what res? What was your minimum fps?

I don't remember my 7800 GT or 8800 320 getting that high, but I could be hazy I guess.

I was going off the fact that I read somewhere that consoles gpu muscle is somewhere around the 7800 GT, and my 7800 GT sure couldn't max out everything without stutter.

I ran it maxed on 7900GTX 512 with minimal issue. Only once did it noticeably lag, but was gone as soon as it came, and wasn't in combat, so no big deal.
The expansions lagged a little more, but no times in combat. Only once it got real bad, but was in a hallway that went heavy with the shadows. I could deal.

But 7900 GTX is more powerful than console GPUs isn't it?

I'm definitely not trying to be argumentative here, I'm just really curious how well a current console would run the PC version of FEAR fully maxed out at a high res (1680x1050 or above).
