I'm done with this thread. Too many people on this forum don't know how to disagree without hurling insults at an OP or mocking them in general. It's actually quite sad, since it reflects what people are like in person.

The rant giveth and the rant taketh away. :D

You could always yield on your claim that the store policies were "unreasonable", but I don't think you are going to change your position at this point.

And if you're willing to stand by what you think, why can't other people who strongly disagree with you continue to push back?

I always reply, "Just looking" and they leave me alone. Maybe the way I say it, they figure this dude isn't buying anything :D

Not a computer store experience but I've had two Filipino girls stand extremely close to me while I was "just looking" at health supplements. I almost wanted to shout, "You are making me EXTREMELY uncomfortable!".

It was years ago (5 or more). One was cute and kinda chatty. Definitely had a bf (these girls never stay single). The other was cute and kinda shy. Said "Sir" in that awfully pitiful way that almost any heart would melt and you would embrace her and tell her that she would never have to say "Sir" like that again to anyone ever again! Of course, I didn't do that (coz I'm an idiot). She may not have had a bf. She's one of the few who often star in my "What If" daydreams.

I'm gonna guess that you aren't near a Microcenter...

Nope...maybe 1000 miles away. Even the closest Fry's is about 125 miles...and I don't think I'd drive more than 5-10 miles to go to Fry's any more.

Girls talk to me all the time. But annoyingly only when they need something from me. I was at a programming bootcamp and this young girl (age max 25) came up to me and asked, "Can I do anything for you?"
I'm like, "Huh?"
She says, "I was eating in the lab and the proctors caught me and now my punishment is to help a number of people get what they want".
I said, "It's fine. I'm OK".
She said, "Oh no but I must do something for you. They are watching me. Do you want water?"
I say, "Oh yeah. Fine".
And she brought me a bottle of water. Found out later that she's some fashion celebrity. Super polite, considering she was a sort of a celeb.

Store policy. Not like they are singling you out. Leave the bag in the car. You took the bus, well tough luck then. Follow their rules or get out of their store.

it's not like those places (or even mini-marts) have ever had problems that would lead to such a policy...right?

I guess having a backpack in a retail store in general usually gives bad vibes for the workers, and they're probably not allowed to search it, so this is the best way to try to avoid theft I guess. In general, businesses have little to no power against theft, it's actually pretty terrible. They are allowed to chase you up until the end of the property line but not like they can tackle you or anything, they'll get in trouble. Same goes for if someone tries to steal from you at your house. The system basically enables theft.

I heard lot of bad experiences from Canada Computers in general though as far as customer service goes. Never been to a physical store so maybe it's better in person, but online some people have been screwed. Not being able to return defective stuff etc. My only somewhat bad experience is I had to return something once and it took forever to get any kind of response. By the time I did it was past the return period. They don't really have a return system, you have to contact them. They did end up accepting the return in the end though, but like looking at some subs on Reddit everyone says to avoid ordering from that store. It's too bad since we really don't have all that many places here to buy computer parts anymore. I miss Tigerdirect and NCIX.

Noob. You hand the person your bag and instruct s/he to follow you around. You got a servant for the duration of uour window shopping. What is not to like?

I thought Fry's folded? I have ordered a few things from them before.

Truth. Every word of this. They really aren't singling anyone out, so that's not an issue. But following you around is indeed uncomfortable.

Maybe just take out your laptop/important stuff from your bag and carry that around with you... no bag to steal stuff. :D

I've never been in such a situation and I live 15 minutes from a Microcenter which I've been to several times. Even dragged my girlfriend in there a few times and she usually carries a purse you can fit the week's laundry in for the both of us. No one asked us to leave her bag at the front or followed us around. I did get the occasional "are you being helped?" or "let me put my sticker on whatever item you are buying."

But it does make sense, I suppose perhaps several times people have shoplifted there before wearing bookbags or whatever.

Probably that person is on commission.

ah, this sounds like the original Circuit City...remember how the employees used to wear suits and pomade their hair, and they were also all on commission? Back when going out to get a 17inch color Zenith and "a HiFi" was kinda like buying a Datsun for your family, and Circuit City sure as fucking did set it to make you feel like you were walking into a Dealership!

And bad at their job. I used to do commission sales 20+ years ago, but I promise nagging customers nonstop is not the best way to get a sale. As for the backpack policy, I agree that is a valid policy because people suck.
