Unfortunaly not all complexes are alike. I want to "strangle" the lady above me. When you live in a complex and it's not really really sound proofed you can't just do "every day things" like you live in a house or something. You always need to be consciencious of what you are doing. You need to be thinking of other people.
Which means you can't be a heavy walker. Footsteps really carry. And there are 3 of you? Imagine hearing 6 pairs of heavy walking all day. It will drive you batty. Someone is over there, now over there, over there in that room. Creaking here Creaking there. Walk lighter so the steps dont thump on the floor.
When you open and close cabinets you just dont let them slam shut. Sure you aren't pushing them shut hard but just letting it go out of your hands from a foot away will really make a loud noise. Now you have 3 of you making meals all day and night. Those cabinet doors can be shutting 100 times a day. Hold the cabinet door and dont let go until it's closed. Then it wont make a loud knocking noise.
Then you have doors. Open close, open close over and over and over. But you're just opening a door like you have to! Well just doing that is loud! When you close the door turn the handle first and lightly push it shut. The latch will be pulled back so there will be no resistance.
The 3 of you must listen to music or watch TV. Be careful it's not loud. And bass carries a long long way.
I know you think you are not being loud and just doing everyday things. But thats the problem. You live in a community and are just doing things like no one is around. You can't do that. You need to learn to be more soft. Or find a place where there are cement floors and good sound proofing. It sounds like you chose a place that is not. So you need to make adjustments and be thinking of other people. In time it just becomes habit and you dont even try anymore.
It's kind of like going to a movie theater if you were 8 feet tall and sitting down right in front of the only other people in the theater. What you aren't doing anything wrong? You are just watching a movie like you "usually do". But things are not usual and you would need to be mindful of that and consiencious of where you sit.
You have no Idea how insane all that noise will drive someone. I wanted to go punch the inconsiderate lady above me. Just a dumb blonde who is oblivious to anyone around her. I couldn't enjoy living in my own home. I was so stressed out my health got really bad. My mind was falling apart my body was falling apart. I was about to have a nervous breakdown. I went and bought a house and put my condo on the market. Now I feel better than ever. I will never EVER go back to condo living. The thing is she used to have a roommate. I had no idea she had a roommate. Her roommate was quiet as a mouse. They both just did their "normal things" but her roommate did them softer and was reasonable. But the one I couldn't stand would do them all without thinking and was very loud. Not loud if you are in a house with no one to consider but loud if you are underneith in a condo.
Now imagine THREE of you doing this. The poor lady must be going batty.
This poor lady is probably going batty

Do you slam your door, walk heavy on hardwood floors, play music, or watch tv? Try being careful with such activities and turn down the volume. More than one person in an apartment creates an endless pounding in the apartment below. Somehow, I doubt your building is a well-made concrete structure that dampens noise. When you talk with your roommates, do you raise your voice? Try being quiet and see if that helps.
Unfortunately, quiet is a relative term so your quiet would most likely drive me up a wall. I am glad you are not my neighbor.

What kind of floors? Carpet or wood? Very old building?
The last apt my wife and I lived in had wood floors and was build in the late 1890s. Sound from the apt above carried and actually amplified the sound. The girl up there would walk around in metal heels, making it sound like a damn horse with shoes was trotting around. They even were playing yahtzee once and the sound of dice amplified to drums....it was ridiculous how bad the acoustics affected everything.
OTOH, we never complained until it was atleast 11pm.

We are not the party types, we actually choose apartments farther from the university to get away from that crap. We have carpet all around, we are typically very quiet and as I said before, we have never had a complaint in any previous apartment. I talked to our next door neighbors and they haven't heard a peep. I actually haven't even played music on my stereo since I've moved in. God only knows what would happen if I did. Also, keep in mind this lady is at home almost 24/7 and does not seem to have a job.

I don't want to become friends with a middle aged fat lady on welfare... Not my idea of a good time.
