Yes, In my experience, Vonage must be put in front of the router between the router and the cable modem.

I had it working behind the router but was unable to access the Vonage box to change settings.

So do you have 2 IP addresses then?

No, I changed the MAC address of the Vonage box to match the MAC address of my main box (and router). My Cableco sees the cloned MAC address of the Vonage box and figures it's my router (or main box).

Ok, then I'm confused. You go from modem --> Vonage --> router? So your router is hooked into the Vonage which is hooked into the cable modem? Just trying to figure out how you have two devices coming out of the cable modem and only one pulling an IP.

How does 911 and other emergency services work?

OK,

Wall--->Cable Modem--->Vonage--->router--->gigabit switch--->>>>>machines

911 works, kinda. You register your address at Vonage's website, and that allows Vonage to route your call to the proper 911 center and display your addy.

So the Vonage has a RJ-45 for the router?

Yes, the Vonage passes through with an "in" and an "out" port.

You know, they have all this info at their site. :)

I know, I'm looking at it. :p

Just easier hearing it from somebody's who's already gone through the hassle.

anyone know if this would work with Lingo? I'm in need of a house phone (going only cell phone doesn't cut it anymore) and Lingo looks to have a better plan (Unlimited domestic and long distance for $19.99 per month with the first 3 months free) but I was wanting the whole house connected. This same thing should work with lingo right?
up for my question.
since there wasn't an answer to my question, let me ask another.

why did you choose vonage over Lingo?

Because they looked to be the strongest company. They also seemed to have the most users, and therefore the most user based support I could find on the web.

Oh, I'll be honest. I'm a sucker for a popular name brand. :D

Cable modem->Router->Switch=PCs and Vonage box. Works like a charm.

Did you have to do anything special to get the Vonage to work through the router? Port forwarding?
