Ok. I consider myself pretty good with phone stuff. As long as the point at which the phone line from outside (Telcompany line) is not connected.... IE, when you pick up another phone in your house, you get nothing. Then you can plug your vonage device into the phone jack nearest it and should have signal to all of your other phones. Vonage actually talks about this. Broadvox and others have instructions to that effect I believe. Just make sure that when you pick up the phone that it's dead and does NOT get a dial tone. Otherwise you could mess up your vonage device. All your jacks in the house are connected up together, and so it should work just fine. The other thing to ensure is that you don't have any other filters on the line. Powered ones could cause damage, but non powered probably just could cause it to not work. Below is from the Vonage site:
Some Vonage DigitalVoice customers have plugged the ATA directly into the existing telephone wiring in their homes.

The manufacturer (Cisco) of the adapter does not recommend hooking anything to the adaptor other than a telephone, but you can seek advice from an electrician or someone who is familiar with internal telephone wiring on how to best connect it to your current wiring to take advantage of multiple extensions. We would advice that you pre-check the wiring on the jacks to make sure you don't have live PSTN voltage on the jacks before connecting them to the ATA (this can be easily done by using a line tester such as those that are available at Radio Shack). Be advised that any damage resulting from practices contrary to manufacturers recommendations for the ATA will not be covered by warranty.

I plan on disconnecting the telco line coming in (it comes in at my crawl space under the stairs) and hooking Vonage up to that as soon as I get it.... Good Luck! -Tal

So I take that as, as long as the lines are unhooked comming into the house, it should be fine, The line is disconnected at the DMARC.

Amused, are you on InsightBB? (For some reason I think I've seen you mention it before, but I could be mistaken.)

If so, how is the quality of Vonage? Do you suffer lags when on the phone?

None that I've seen. The only thing I'm worried about is Insight's crappy upload speed of 128kb. I've surfed while on the phone and it seemed OK. I haven't tried anything intensive, though.

I just got it hooked up today.

The voice quality is every bit as good as it was with the telco.

Yeah insight's upload sucks. Anything above 10 up saturates the line, that is why I was worried about Vonage.

Did you know insightbb offers a 384 up line?

Yeah, but that's not worth the $35 fscking premium they want for it. :|

Vonage seems to work fine for at least casual surfing. Which is all I do on the phone anyhow.

CRAP!! I just found out I STILL have a dial tone on my telco line. I TOLD them to disconnect me completely.

I guess I'll have to call an electrition or telephone guy to physically disconnect me.

Any idea on what type of workman to call for this?

I have the option of DSL, but I refuse to deal with Verizon. I don't want a home phone nor do I want an 8 month contract on DSL.

No DSL here. I'm in a little town outside of Springfield.

Like I said, I haven't had a problem with surfing while on the phone. We'll see over long term...

The phone company. ;)

Even if a WORKMAN disconnects the line, you'll still have a dial tone... it just won't be on your jacks. It will end at the disconnection.

Think of it as water and the phone sytem as plumbing. The water needs to be turned off at the main (Telco)

Or just go out to your dmarc and unplug the line

do it yourself. Don't you know where the phone line comes in? You could even go outside your house and open the box there with a flat screwdriver usually and just cut it there. If you decide to hook up to a normal telco again later, they can fix that. I would just cut it.

Edit: And I mean the box on the side of your house..... not the one on the street. Just didn't want anyone to get arrested....

That's what the proposed workman would do... but this doesn't solve the underlying problem of the TelCo still providing service to the line. They need to shut it off.

If you have access to the phone line where it comes into your house and connect the wire that goes to all of the lines in your house it should work. The main worry would be the voltage coming from the line from the phone company. So, if you find where the phone line comes into your house I say go for it. It should not hurt anything. On a side note, the Vonage box may not be able to supply enough voltage to ring every phone in your house if you have a large house with a lot of phones.

Well, I went out there and I was right. It's really muddy and wet.

The box was also crawling with big, nasty looking spiders. So I sprayed bug poison all over the box and around it. I'll give it a looksee when the rain stops and the mud dries up.

Great thread...I'm looking into Vonage for my family right now, I was gonna post to see what some reactions were on the ease of setup and use since I won't always be around.

Super easy set up, Just plug it in. Have not had any problems with it sense I put it in.
