So I got cross-checked in the face last night...

Last night in my hockey game there was this massive guy holding me and hitting me with his stick. I turned around and punched him in the shoulder (he's probably 6'2" so he stands at least 5 inches over me). He retaliated by cross-checking me in the face as hard as he could and I dropped like a rock. My face is all mangled up, cut and bloody. I don't think it's broken though.

My nose/face is so sore right now. It's been 24 hours and while the inside of my nose seems like it's stopped bleeding, I can still hork up blood from the back of my throat.

I have no respect for this player anymore. I'm waiting to hear from the league if the guy will be suspended or not.

This guy was a monster... at least twice my size and I'm a big guy even for 5'9.

I didn't have a chance to fight back, by the time I got up, the guy was already in the box.

No, it's why some people suck.

 He never said he's a professional hockey player, why do you care what local team he plays on?

Tell that to Donald Brashear

There's a difference between playing rough and being a stupid idiot. This guy was an idiot.

Ahhh... from the way it sounded I thought maybe before you hit him you coulda had a chance to knock him down at least.

Hopefully you heal up quickly.

I just play in a local recreational league. I'm in the ASHL (Adult Safe Hockey League). It's fun and competitive for anyone 18 and up.

You ever think maybe instead of being a frustrated baby and venting with a punch in the shoulder, you should have tried to outplay him? He's a classic aggrivator, a staple of any good hockey team. If the ref's not calling the holds, yell at the ref, don't take it out on the player that's getting away with it. Or, alternately, try to see what you can get away with as well (act like he's obviously holding you, just don't take a obvious dive). It's just part of the game of hockey.

I don't care if I'm getting away with holding you or not, it's not my problem, it's between you and the ref... as soon as you throw a punch I'd be going Bob Probert on you as well (a cross-check to the face is cheap, but he still should have just beat the crap outta you). If nobody on your team retaliated (Think McCarty on Claude Lemieux) then obviously there wasn't a reason to, or you were just being an idiot and deserved it. Using a stick as a weapon is lowly, but it couldn't have been that blatant if nobody got your back.

Don't hate the player, hate the game.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is the United Nations official stance on the subject.

That sucks.

I played in a no-check house league at my local rink. (They don't have a checking league)One time, I was playing defense, I got the puck from behind my own net, and moved it up to one of the forwards who was sprinting up ice. About 3 seconds go by, and then this jackass on the other team who was forechecking blind sides me with a cross check to the side of my neck!. I guess he was pissed because my outlet pass trapped him deep in our end. I'm 5'7" - 155lbs, this guy was about 6'2" and way over 200 lbs.

This crap happened right in front of the ref, who just let it go. One of my teammates saw this, skated over to him, and knocked the guy down.

My neck was pretty damn sore, and seeing how the ref was going to let this guy, it was time for some vigilante justice.

I skated over to the guy as he was getting back up, slid the top hand on my stick down a little bit, and gave him the butt end into the throat as I went by. He dropped like a ton of bricks. Yea, it was dirty, but that fvcker almost broke my neck for no freaking reason.

He rolled around on the ice for about 5 minutes, gasping for air. At first the refs were going to give me a double minor, but then they decided that I deserved a match penalty for retaliating. I wound up with a 3 game suspension. He got nothing except a cold back from flopping around on the ice gasping for breathe like a fish out of water.

I'm out to have fun when I play, and running people and playing dirty stickwork is really not my game. I even let alot of sh*t go when stuff is done to me. However, when someone takes a run at me for no freaking reason, and tries to deliberately injure me, I'm going to defend myself and make sure they understand the consequences of their actions.

The guy was a real scumbag too... constantly causing skirmishes and stuff. It's a house league... there aren't any NHL scouts watching, and there never will be.

Anyways, sorry about what happened to you. When you play them again, light them up for a hat trick.

Last time I checked, intentional cross checks across the grill with your stick is not part of the "game".

You are justifying this guy getting cracked in the face with a hockey stick because he hit him in the shoulder? I played hockey growing up and have watched it on many levels over thirty years. That is just cheap and uncalled for and nothing can justify it.

A) Wear a full mask and you won't have to worry about anything of the sort
B) Punching a guy in the shoulder is an invitation to a fight, not something that a guy twice your size is likely to let go.
C) Your team is a bunch of pussies if no one jumped the guy when you got a stick to the face.

mattlear, if you were on the opposing team and was on the ice when you gave my player a butt-end to the throat I'd come after you instantly, no second thought. WTF are you thinking?! You don't give a guy a butt end to the throat because he cross-checked you, you're a fscking retard if you think that's the way to get back at him.

The correct way to deal with a cheap shot by the way, is to tell the opposing player to keep his head up (even in a non-contact league), and level him with a clean hit when the opportunity comes up. When you get called, you go straight to the box and keep your mouth shut.
