Maybe you should get out and walk along a freeway sometime, there is this thing called air, and it tends to build up in a cone shaped barrier around a fast moving vehicle. Larger vehicles create bigger cones of this thing called air and when it's moving at nearly the same speed as the car the vortecies that form behind this cone of air can do things like suck a fully sized human being out into the travel lane. In addition people tend to do stupid things while driving like glance down at their radio or pick up objects and in that half a second that they aren't looking the car travels in excess of 44ft (at 65mph) and in that instant a slight deviation in bearing will result in a side motion of up to a few feet and that officer getting in and out of his car or walking up to your can be killed by that person that stopped paying attention for just a half a second.

At less than 40K a year these public servant should be able to stop vehicles without threat of being killed and leaving their familes to fend for themselves.

i don't know, maybe you should extend that to any car pulled over to the far right then? the process seems the same whenever anybody has a situation where they need to pull over; pull over, check mirrors, exit vehicle, and stay the fvck away from the side where people are going 60+ mph?

Is the cop stupid enough to open his door into a car? stupid enough to exit his vehicle w/o checking to make sure he's not about to get FVCKED up?

i respect cops (for the most part) but this looks like another money pit for the city

Hmm, apparently Pennsylvania does have one, but:

Move-Over-Law: B. Right-Of-Way.

§ 3327. Duty of driver in emergency response areas.

(a) General rule.--When Subchapter approaching or passing an emergency response area, no person shall drive a vehicle:

1. at a speed greater than is reasonable and prudent under the conditions, having regard to the actual and potential hazards then existing; or
2. in disobedience of instructions or indications relating to traffic flow which are made, either verbally or through the use of signs, flares, signals, lights or other traffic control devices, by law enforcement personnel or emergency service responders.

(b) Penalty.--Any person violating subsection (a) commits a summary offense and shall, upon conviction, pay a fine of $85.

That seems like common sense to me.

Anyway we were on the highway and there was a section where the speed was reduced. Of course there were about 10 cops there waiting to catch people who didn't slow down fast enough. Luckly I saw the sign and slowed down. I thought I would be fine.... but I was wrong.

There were about 3 cops I saw with their lights on that had pulled people over. I was going pretty slow in the right lane, about 55. The speed limit was 60. I passed by one of the cops that had his lights on. He was walking back to his car after just giving someone a ticket. As soon as he got in his car he turned his lights on and came after me. I was sitting there thinking WTF could he have possibly pulled me over for.

He comes up and tells me (in the most rude, obnoxious, assholish way) that I did not move over into the passing lane when I went by him. He makes me wait about 20min then comes back with a ticket for $115.50 saying I violated the Move Over Act. I asked if this would add points and he said yes and also remarked that I should "just try comming to court. The judge would love to see me". What a complete asshole.

I didn't even know this was a real law but apparently snopes says it is. I live in FL so I guess they must have JUST passed it. Anyone ever get pulled over for this before? Can I fight this? I have to leave for college in a week so I probably won't even be able to get a court date before then.

Cliffs: Asshole cop pulls me over. Gives me a $115.50 ticket for violating the move over act.

hey, here's a tip. when there is somebody in the emergency lane you are to move into the left lane. He taught you a valuable lesson.

Regardless of the law, it is just plain common sense and good driving. Especially if it is an emergency vehicle with big friggin flashing lights.

The move over act is in place to protect officers. Either slow down or move over when vehicles are on the side of the road. It is a common courtesy and now law in many if not all states.

If he gets "cornholed" they were following to closely and I doubt the cops couldn't be seen by those behind him.

and that is the law.

look people, I was no where near the cop. I moved over as far as I could without pulling into the left lane. there was faster moving traffic in the left lane. in order to move over I would have had to either speed up or cut someone off. I did slow down. I was going under the speed limit. and he did not clock me. he had no idea how fast I was going. he just wanted to give me a ticket. it was the reason he and his buddies were all hanging around an area on the highway where the speed was reduced.

Accidents happen, these laws make it less likely for an officer doing his job to be killed by someone that got a telephone call on their cell. The number of accidents involving officers being hit by vehicles during routine traffic stops has been steadily increasing. Most of these accidents are the result of inattentive drivers. The simple act of slowing down 20mph or moving over into the other lane can save a life and yet you think it is a revenue generation ploy. It's sad that you place so little value on human life.

I guess you haven't seen all the vids of cars going off the road and crashing into cops as if they were giant fvcking magnets.

'During the five-year period of 1996-2000, motorists in Florida crashed into working law enforcement vehicles that were stopped/parked along Florida roadways 1,793 times, resulting in five deaths and 419 injuries.'

Edit: I do move over when cars are parked in the emergency lane.

never a cop when you need one, always there when you don't. That's the golden rule.

Yes, you will get rearended if you slam your brakes on. On the other hand if you note a vehicle on the shoulder, in particular a police cruiser and being slowing down immediately upon noticing said vehicle you won't get hit. In fact that is exactly what you are supposed to do.

Why do people think it's ok to risk someone elses life because it's inconvient to slow down for 30 seconds?

I agree, not only are the cops cranking a gravy revenue train but they are purposely impeding the flow of traffic in addition to the Christmas Party money funding.

Disgusting :|

I hate to add new Laws but I would make a Federal Law abolishing such a trap.

They passed these laws because of the large number of cops who got run over by people who didn't bother to be careful. In that respect, not changing lanes is like waving a gun at them. They would be stupid not to do something about it, as it directly endangers them. These laws will be everywhere soon if they aren't already, they should have passed one nationally when they got rid of the speed limit.

Yea, because lieing in court when there is an officer as a witness is an incredibly intelligent thing to do.

Look people, laws like this one and double fines in workzones are being implimented because the majority of people out there are stupid and putting in danger the public servants and construction workers that are out there to keep our highways safe. Obey the law and stop bitching if you get a ticket for putting someones life in danger.

yeah cause the officer is always right. innocent till proven guilty. ever heard of that?

Because you didn't know the situation and you advised to say there was a car next to him and that the officer couldn't prove otherwise (Other than the officer was a witness to the incident). That can ONLY mean you intended him to lie. Your attempt to claim you weren't advising him to lie is almost as pathetic as advising him to lie.

as far as the cops attitude, once again you have no idea about his motivations...his wife could have left him, his dog could have been shot, it coudl have been the OP..any of those reasons could have gotten him the ticket. and to think that there aren't cops out there on powertrips just wanting to give out tickets for no reason is naive.

And the officer could have been nearly killed and he could have recently attended the funeral of one of his fellow officers hit by some inconsiderate irresponsible a$shole.

As I said, be glad it's only a ticket, this law makes it possible for them to put you in prison for hitting a cop on the side of the road even if it wasn't intentional.

hey, can you tell me where you got that autobullsh!tter? i swear i need one of those so i can turn it on during an argument and prove my point my bullsh!tting. thanks.

wow, your state must have some sort of superhuman cops with radarguns attached to their ears that clock you on their way to their car... amazing. which state is this? i am thinking of bringing this up with a couple politicians in my state.

Uh your a uneducated;ignorant driver/Or are just stupid. {See my sig;)}

I am saddened by the amount of ignorant drivers.

I think that Drivers education/driving school, should be mandatory for a license.

Too many rules that people don't know, and, most are actually common sense.

Someone is on the shoulder, especially a Police/Ambulance/Fire truck,
move over as much as practical, and Slow down.
:|

What if someone opens the vehicle door, and walks in front of your car?
They could die,and your car would be damaged.:(

I'm not sure how it is elsewhere, but here in Texas...you have 2 options:

-Switch lanes so there is at least one lane between your car and the copper.
-Drive 20 below the posted speed limit if you're unable to move over lanes.
