So, I became a 49ers fan. (now with pix)

I figure, since I live here and a friend is a fan, I made him a promise that I'll cheer for the 49ers unless (if ever) the Patriots and the 49ers were to meet.

That and attending the winning home opener helped. I think I was the loudest guy at the stadium!

The more you know.

I was a 49ers fan for a long time but intellectually I have a hard time rooting for a team when it is the players I like and they move.

I have the opposite view. Our whole fucking team left and I had no reason to care about football for 16 years. I feel the same now. All about the hometown; the players come and go. Even if Ray Lewis had left 2 years ago when he became a free agent, I would not have followed him or rooted for his success elsewhere.

Trent Dilfer came back to Baltimore for a game when he was with Seattle. He had to come into the game for a snap after we shook up the starting QB. The entire stadium cheered for him (our way of saying thanks for the SB) when he came in and he waved to the crowd before he went in the huddle.
First play, he got sacked and then we cheered twice as loud for that and then laughed him off the field. Game on!

No, but I'll be back there this weekend facing the Cowgirls!

I am jealous. My family has had season tickets since 1946. I started going to games at 7 years old and went to all but one game 1979-1986. I live too far away now and only get to one game every couple years or so.

Last year, through a friend of a friend, I got pre-game field passes for my son, father, bro-in-law and me:

That's cool man, I remember when you posted that. I was looking for you. Hah!

My former step-dad's brother in law was Fred Quillan, center in the late 70s to late 80s. We were able to go see the 49ers play the bears in 1987 for a MNF game. The bears' flight leaving SFO was cancelled due to fog, so Fred took us out to a bar the players frequented. I met Gary Fencik, Dwight Hampton, Ray Wersching, Jerry Rice, Jay Hilgenberg, Richard Dent, Harry Sydney, Roger Craig, and Charles Haley. What a trip!

They got those Great Unis. How many years are they going to give Alex Smith to "prove" himself though? They should have drafted someone else or traded for someone else long ago.

It's weird to be down on the field. Via Twitter last year, Drayton Florence (of the Bills) assembled people to give out T-shirts that he bought and we got to go down on the field with him for a picture and he signed the t-shirts. It was great. I had been on the field before for marching band when I was a young buck (although the Dome in Syracuse seemed like a bigger deal at 14), but being on the field at 25 was a bit different.

PS: We only got down on the field after a practice. Before a real game would be way cooler. But I still will remain a fan of Florence's regardless of where he plays in the future.

Welcome to the team. The experience should remind you of what it was like to be a Red Sox fan when you were growing up.
