So, how much cash....

do you keep in a checking account?

Just curious (as unscientific as it may be). This doesn't include savings accounts, money market accounts, CDs, (or any other readily-accessible accounts). Just how much cash do you keep in your primary checking account.

I suppose that my balance fluctuates between $100-$800 in cash above-and-beyond checks I have outstanding (I tend to try and siphon off any extra money in to a savings account). On the other hand, I work at a law firm, and have had a couple of folks in the last couple of weeks who keep $30K+ in a checking account (although they seem to have $0 in a savings account, retirement, etc.)

So... if you care to share....

And if you get really bored, part (b) is "how much cash do you keep around the house in case of an emergency?"

averages $1K... spikes a bit towards the end of the month after I get my paycheck and before rent/utilities get deposited.

And where do you keep it, and what is your street address?

I keep a fair amount because of a new weaselly minimum balance charge my bank just added -- $14/month for less than $5K. Time to change banks I think.

Yikes -- sounds like a crazy bank!

Also, while I would like to know how much cash you have on hand, and where you live... unfortunately, I'm honest, and I don't want to steal from folks.

As far as "just having this thread" -- I searched, but I couldn't find anything.... sorry :-(

$1000-$7000 depending on where in the month we are. After the mortgage is paid at the start of the month it's down around $1000, but by the end of the month there is $5-7k in there depending on other monthly expenses.

I try to keep it around $1500-$2000 without letting it go below $1000. Everything else is in a "high interest" savings account. High interest was 1.5% last time I checked. 🙄

Anywhere between $200 and $2000, depending on what bills have been paid and when my paychecks come in. I'm anal about getting most of my money in interest-yielding accounts, so I bring it down to around $200 by default.

I never use my debit card, so I just leave enough for a random emergency check or something. Which never happens.

generally about 3k.. goes higher or lower depending on time of the month. I try to not let it drop below 1k, and I transfer money to savings/investments at the end of the month to keep it from getting too high.

usually between 2-5K ... we get paid once per month here towards the end of the month, and my mortgage is due towards the beginning of the month, so there's a week or two between the direct deposit and when I pay my mortgage (mortgage sucks up all my money .. hehehe)

1K in checking, and 10K in savings that can be quickly transferred to checking if I need more.

Other than that it goes into retirement, toward a loan, or into a CD or something.

Around $2-7k. When it gets up to 7k after my bills are paid, I transfer 5k to my Fidelity to invest or put into money market/CDs. And repeat.

For cash, I don't usually keep any cash in my apt, and anywhere from $0-40 in my wallet. I don't use cash much, try to use Credit card for everything and pay it off monthly.

Pretty much all of it. I live in the UK though and my bank gives you £5 if you deposit £1,000 or more but my girlfriend and I take advantage of this a bit because we have an account in my name, an account in her name and a joint account so we bounce this 1k around the 3 accounts and get £15 a month for it.

I suppose I could put that 1k and any savings into a savings account to earn a bit of interest on top of that and I think that is something I will look at when I get some time to look at the best options.

We also have some money in a growth bond that was guaranteed at 8% just before the recesion hit so that money is staying put until it matures.
