Driving position!

  • Classic two hands on the wheel, elbows bent near body

  • Two hands on the wheel, left elbow on the door

  • One hand on wheel, other hand on shift (regardless if you're driving stick or not)

  • Two hands on the bottom of the wheel

  • Two hands on the top of the wheel, gripped close together

  • One hand on the bottom of the wheel, other hand doing something else

  • I don't know how to drive

casual driving = one hand on the bottom of the wheel, the other hand in my lap or futzing with radio presets.

when I've actually got to be paying attention (eg: city driving, changing lanes, etc) I'm at 10/2 (or as close to that as my steering wheel allows, my thumbs are on the steering wheel bars)

Virtually always left hand between 11 and 1. The steering wheel is even coming apart there on one of my cars because its the only place my hand goes. Big turns involve "the crank".

That's basically how I do it too. Nasty weather my right hand will find it's way on the wheel. I have noticed with both hands, tire grip is relayed much more effectively to my body and thus mind.

I can do almost any turn with only one hand quite easily with my truck and the way my steering wheel translates to actual movement. Some cars I have noticed it is more difficult to achieve one-hand turning, partially because I am less familiar with how the vehicle and wheel relays information to my hands.

I am keeping an eye out on future AWD cars that feature paddle-shifts, like the twin-clutch Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart or Lancer EVO MR... though the latter is expensive as fuck these days for some reason... Subaru hasn't offered it yet (ever? keeping to the manual-only in most rally-inspired models). If I ever get an "auto-stick" / dual/twin-clutch car with paddles, it's going to be strange adapting to two hands on the wheel, though I'll likely only do so at times of shifts, so stop-n-go mostly, long roads and highways I'd still be real comfortable in the seat.

I get bored so I change positions and hands all the time. Sometimes I'll be driving with one knee and doing paperwork, shaving, etc.

The "gangsta lean" is so lame. Not only does it look stupid, it makes you totally incapable of responding to an emergency situation increasing the odds of a stupid crash. This is why a lot of dumbass teenagers crash their cars at night when they take a sharp turn too fast.

Stop imitating rap videos, people.

I am a left hander so I hold the steering wheel @ 9 o'clock position with my elbow on top of the door handle.

They've been teaching in driving schools that the 10 and 2 is actually not the safest way to drive, it's an out-of-date method. 8 and 4 is safer, with the invention of airbags, mainly because when air bags deploy and you're at 10 and 2, you will break your wrists. 8 and 4 gives you the same control as 10 and 2.

depends on the way the steering wheel is formed. on my 96 corolla I had my hands around 8 and 4. on our 07 camry I have to have my hands at 9 and 3, because the steering wheel "arms" are in the way.

if i'm just cruising, i'll have maybe three fingers on the bottom of the wheel, either 5 or 7, depending on which hand I'm using.

What you see most people doing IS NOT the Gangster Lean, unless they're leaning slightly to the right and looking out the window. Since 99% of the people I see doing this aren't doing it correctly I think it should be called something else.

My hands tend to move a lot, I don't have 1 set position. It's usually 1 hand on the wheel and 1 on the stick since I drive a Manual transmission. But depending on speed and conditions I will put both on the wheel, or one hand on the bottom of the wheel, or top etc.

Douche-lean sounds about right.

I go with 9 and 3 because I've read it gives you better control than 10 and 2 - it's what F1 drivers use.

left hand around 7-8 o'clock most of the time, elbo rests on the door rest this way
This, with right hand either at 2 if it's nasty out, or on the gearshift if it's not. I drive an automatic, but I turn overdrive off if I want to start slowing down slowly, and/or if I'm going down a long hill. (We have big hills here in Colorado, you know. ;))

P.S. My Driver's Ed instructor told me to use 9/3 because the airbag going off would break my arms at 10/2.

because of the location of the spokes, my wheel forces your grip at 10 and 2, but that's where i like it anyway. and...sit up straight dammit! you're piloting a car, not napping in a lay-z-boy!

Gangsta lean.

But, on most days, I need to have my left hand at 12 o'clock. Otherwise, I can't fap.

Sometimes with the left if I want to make it feel like someone else. Most of the time with the right. Two hands is a bit unwieldy to get the timing right to move both hands synchronized to feel right though. Sometimes I do like a little lotion when I grip my steering wheel.
