So, how do I go about getting a vasectomy?

I'm getting one. So, how do I go about it? I don't have a PCP currently, so do I need one of them to give me a referral to a specialist? What do I need to do to actually get this done? I will pay out of pocket if need be, but will be looking into insurance for it so I don't have to pay out of pocket.

Those of you who have gotten one, what was the process?

Update 9/28: Called the insurance, it's 100% covered as long as it's with an "in-network doctor". They gave me a list of some docs. Called one today and have the consult scheduled for 11/5. Can't wait.

Now lets just hope that they perform it even though I'm 23...

Update 12/09: Apparently I forgot to update the OP with the 11/5 appointment results (I think I did respond in the thread though). Anyways, appointment is this Friday at 3 pm (12/11). Looking forward to it, and have some frozen peas in the freezer. I also have a few TV shows for me to watch (V, Flash Forward, Heroes, White Collar, etc), and since this week is finals week school will be out :). Also have L4D2 that can keep me busy when I'm not sleeping or watching tv. I'll post an update after the procedure.

Update 12/12 POST OP!!!!: I planned on posting yesterday to update everybody, but besides the pain and not wanting to move I slept from 5 pm until 8:30 AM this morning.

The procedure was real quick and painless. Was joking around with the nurse/doc while he was snipping. Didn't feel a thing except the needle injected into my balls (which is a weird feeling btw), and then when he closed the incisions I felt pulling on the skin while the nurse cut the thread (whatever they use for stitches). Was 15 minutes from when I left the waiting room until I was back in the waiting room.

Got a script for 50 Vicodin which we promptly went and filled. Nuts starting hurting about 2 hours later (feels like you got kicked/punched in the nuts kind of) and are just achy sore. Been putting frozen peas on em which has helped more than the Vicodin has TBH. The pills just make me pass out for 5 hours basically. This morning checked my nuts and they are black and blue, and then there was some more blood that seeped from the incision spots since last night.

What really has to suck is the gf showing off new thongs and sexy outfits she got, which gives me some wood. Grrr. Guess thats the price I pay for having her take care of my every need haha

Edit 5/6/10: Took in the second sample, and got the call yesterday. Officially shooting blanks, have the dr's ok to go without BC. Awesome :) This will be the final update (unless I decide to reverse it later, or it regrows and an "accident" happens or something).

Call your local urologist and tell them to add you to the schedule. You typically go in and talk about it and then set the date. Be warned some docs dont want to do it if you are young and without kids

This. Make an appointment with a urologist. They'll give you the skinny, feel you up, and then evaluate you in terms of "emotional stability" if you have no kids and are fairly young, because, you know, odds are it won't be successfully undone - especially the longer you wait if you've had it done.

If you want your insurance to cover it - you will need to go through a PCP and get a referral.

I did this a few years ago - the only out of pocket qwas the script for the pain pills they gave me - that I didn't need anyway.
VERY easy procedure, and one of the best decisions I have ever made.

My sister-in-law had a voluntary hysterectomy at ~age 32, and had trouble finding a doctor that would do it (too young, may change her mind about kids, etc.)

As I recall, DV is in his 20s - do they give men a hassle about vasectomies at a young age?

it snot that bad. i had it done 3 years ago. you go in they give you a shot. cut it open and do it. all you feel is some tugging and such.

they glue the cuts closed and you put frozen peas (yeah thats what they recommend) on your nutsack for a while.

just a tip. if you get it done DON'T jump off a curb or anything. it fucking hurts!

Okay, so since I don't have a PCP currently what are the odds of getting a PCP to give me a referral quickly? lol I'm assuming pretty low.

Awesome. Thanks.

Happen to know the cost of it if I do it out of pocket?

I don't know why, but vasectomies scare the crap out of me. I'm worried I'll need to get one 10 years down the road.

Had mine about 6 months after my 3rd kid was born. It was relatively painless procedure.

pre - procedure:

doc will 'disseminate' info on th procedure and assess your readiness
ensure that you have discussed with your partner
make you wait so that you don't make and snap decisions

procedure:

you might get a med to calm you down
shots for the pain
incision
extract vas deferens, cut, tie (down stream end), cauterize
repeat on other vas deferens
stitch

post-procedure:
rest / relaxation
keep cold pack on the area
treat discomfort with advil
no ejaculation for about a week
follow up with samples (2 minimum at 2 weeks and 6 months; perhaps a third at 1 yr)

Just because you don't have a PCP doesn't mean you need a referral. Check your insurance first, my previous insurance plan did not require referrals. I don't believe my current plan does either. (Ironically, I have to go get a vasectomy as well - I have 4 more kids than I ever planned on having in the first place; of course I wasn't planning on getting married either!)

Out of pocket will likely be $300-$600-ish I'm thinking. It's an outpatient procedure done in the doctor's office, so that seems about the right range. Seriously though, just call up your insurance provider and ask if they require a referral for that.

Heres the best vasectomy method.

To Wife: Get your tubes tied! No one is going near my boys and snipping anything. Eff that.

I know too many dudes who have had problems. No thanks.

This option of course presumes that the OP has enough "junk" to hang down low enough to perform the vasectomy without also performing an assectomy...:D

OP, does your workplace happen to have one of THESE?
If so, you're golden...PLUS, as an added side benefit, you may qualify for worker's compensation while you recover from the procedure. :p

Getting the tubes tied is way more invasive and dangerous. It really isn't bad, but one point of advice, resist the urge to sniff the smoke when they cauterize.
