Whats up you monkeys!

So, FedEx made me a job offer yesterday as a Network Technician working in their NOC (Network Operations Center). They've offered to move Kristin and I completely (cars including) along with a "moving allowance" out of California, and will put us up some place for a few weeks until we can find a home. The only problem is, its in Memphis! Now, I've not been to Memphis before but I hear great things about it. So, the company will send Kristin and I out there (Hotel, flight and rental car all paid by them) for a few days to see what we think. Anyone have an opinions on Memphis?

Also, check out the goodie bag they gave me when I left. Teh Bootay!

It includes:

- Paper work on a Case Study done on Business Management.
- Paper work showing that FedEx is the 3rd best place to work in in the US in the IT field.
- A FedEx Coffee mug (a nice one I might add).
- Business size envelope with offer letter and legal (HR) paperwork.
- FedEx hat.
- FedEx keychain.
- FedEx badge hook.
- ..and last but not least, a FedEx Express MD-11. Here is a close up of the plane.

We're still not sure what we're going to do yet.

Having never ever lived there I can only share my thoughts having traveled through Memphis a few times: it seems alright.

Like most places it is what you make of it. I grew up and have lived most of my life in NY and I love it here. I did spend a number of years away at school in a decidedly more rural area, New Hampshire, and that was fine as well.

I?m sure you will do fine no matter what decision you make.
Good luck, brudda.

memphis is nice...has that relzed southern drawl

beware: if you are a HUGE city buff used to constant commotion and activity, the south may not be for you. If you are looking for a nice, mellow place to raise a family, this could be it :)

To get away from the high taxes, high home costs, high energy costs and the rampant liberalism of Cali, I wouldn't have thought twice about it. My bags would have been packed the second after I received the offer letter.

yeh, there are no cities in the south. Just small towns with populations hovering around 400.

BTW, the airplane is very cool. I would go to work for fedex just to get one of those.

Your head will spin when you see the size of their Memphis hub. The number of flights per day is insane.

I have a number of friends who work at UPS and they all love it, and I would imagine Fedex is better, judging by how the company is run.

Sounds like a really good deal and that they really want you to come work for them. I would go and I hate the south, assuming it paid well enough to support my girlfriend and myself.

If Fed Ex sends you over to Russia make sure you don't get
on the flight that goes over the south pacific......If you do,
say hi to Tom Hanks for me.....oh yeah....Wilson too!

Memphis is about 4 hours from where I am and I always enjoy
going there and visiting but I haven't lived there.

The prices of houses vary quite a bit depending on what part of
town you live in.

A lot of folks have flocked to the suburbs in the past years and
there has been a lot of building there.

Fed ex is probably one of the biggest employers in the city.

Cool stuff. I guess your best bet is to let them fly you out there for a few days and spend some time with your fiancee exploring the neighberhoods, what there is to do, etc etc.

And Fedex is a non-union shop (unlike UPS), so you don't have to worry about the drivers or pilots striking and shutting down work for weeks or months on end.

Just look at the center of your goodie bag. FedEx is indeed one of the Top 100 companies to work for. I would be proud to work for such a company.
