I generally like Google, although I recall that they acquiesced to China's demands to censor search engine results. Fucking bullshit and I wish someone (especially a company with Google's clout) would tell the Communist government to go fuck themselves on issues like this.

Why does everyone have to either love or hate Google? What ever happened to humbly appreciating a service or politely declining the use of it? I like using Google as a search engine and use my personal iGoogle page daily, that's it. Couldn't care less about their mail, desktop, ads, or other miscellaneous gadgets they keep churning out that everyone else seems to clamor for.

Apply for a job there and then you might see why some people dislike them. I used to be a big fan, but their job application process is extremely pretentious and really cast a negative light on what they think of themselves for me. We have a local company that I used to think was among the most pretentious companies I'd seen. They make you take long exams and only allow people with certain GPAs even if they've been in the industry for 20 years. Google blows them away just with the first part of the application process. I've never seen a company ask how many world records and inventions you have before they'll even let you submit a resume.

lol so you hate them because you can't get a job with them. That's a stupid reason - you have to realize they are one of the top companies to work for and they might as well get the best of the best. If you ran Google, you'd be doing the same thing I'd guess. (at least I probably would)

Though I do see what you mean, don't get me wrong, I'm sure they think very highly of themselves.

As long as they know they're not the best company in the world, I'm okay with them.

Google recruiters have approached me 3 times on Linkedin.
Also the GPA issue isn't that true either. A friend of mine works at Google even though he never finished college.

You're right. I googled "I hate google" and it said No search results. That proves it.

I have my concerns over the privacy issue. "Organizing the world's information" is just too ambiguous to me. If someone has a lot of "organized information" about me, he/she could wield a lot of influence over me.

I hate the fact that they have the Google toolbar turned on by default in many different installers. It feels like they are trying to sneak onto my computer. If I wanted the toolbar I'll download and install it, stop trying to sneak it by me.

^ This. Google Docs is interesting. Google maps can be decent. It's the damned Google software that installs onto your local system that is usually bloated, buggy, or borderline spyware/leech-like.

I wish Google search would search for what I ask it to, instead of trying to be too clever and search for things that are similar to what i type, but not the same, and give completely different results.
Having to put "" around every single search term is pretty damned annoying.

google toolbar breaks a lot of our stuff at work...not sure WHY, but removing it fixes a lot of issues...another thing is, they are constantly pulling information, consuming our bandwidth...we which we watch religiously. (14 other locations coming into one branch from our cloud).

Google maps seems dated, I do like the googel streetview, otherwise live maps is better since they use Navteq maps.

Not at all. I wouldn't hire me at google either. I just found the form you have to fill out to submit a resume really, really pretentious and absurd. Similar thoughts occurred while watching their various videos relating to jobs. They are just way too full of themselves in this regard.

The GPA story was about a local company here, not Google.

Heh yeah. It's funny, I commonly have customers who come to me with PC problems, who obviously always allow the default of all install processes, only to have 1/3 or more of their browser windows covered by : Google toolbar, yahoo toolbar, msn toolbar, AIM toolbar, Norton toolbar, etc, etc. They're always astonished at how well their PCs run when all of that crud is killed.

The new igoogle is generally terrible. Half the stuff in it doesn't work, gmail being the big one. I liked the old version a lot better, and even that was mediocre.
