So do i drop $850 on a used nikon d70 and lens kit!

Where'd you get it for that price?

Fvck, just bought a 2005 FPW, gonna order a laptop in the next few weeks, and I've really been eyeing the D70... yet tuition and books loom. *sigh*
 
well i want a decent starter camera that's manual and that i can keep for some time to come. the d70's been well recieved and I figure if I'm going to drop $400 on a G5 I may as well go all the way.

 
Be glad that you got Nikon. With Canon and their L lens line-ups, you would live with the tempation and that it becomes painful.

Anyway, you'll soon find yourself wanting more lenes that cost more than a couple thousand dollars then more professional DSLRs.
 
Following the spec, D70 is a lot better than digital rebel. However, D70 had/have some serious issues.
I've talked about those issues with sample pictures a while ago.

I've owned Canon digital rebel before, however I turned myself back to compact cameras as I realized that I don't need Dslr cameras at this point, not to mention I couldn't handle the temtation of getting those lenses.

About L lenses, you should do some research because it's not something I can tell you easily.
All I can say is that those L lenses are known as the BEST lenses in the dslr market due to many and many reasons. The only problem is them being freaking expensive. If you get Canon D1 MarkII along with various L lenses, you would be in a different world of photographying (But then again, D1 MarkII alone costs $10,000 and that's the price without any lenses)

BTW, can I say 'lenses'? It sounds weird.
 
Buying a DSLR is not limited to the camera and one lens. Seriously, I am putting off a DSLR until I really know photography, and my lack of absolute control over my Sony F717 gets on my nerves. Plus, I don't have $1500 for the Canon 20D and another $1500 for a couple extra lenses (like a tilt/swivel -- that's the coolest thing ever!).
 
Didn't OneCall.com offer the D70+lens kit for around $1075 new a couple weeks ago? I realize it's $200 more but I'd wait to see if they run a similar special again. Something about buying a used DSLR bothers me unless you know the seller or you're confident it hasn't been abused.

 
The images are STUNNING but the low light performance with the kit lense is pretty poor. NOISE IS VERY GOOD and minimal BUT the images are darkish due to the F on the kit lense.

I'm unaware of any "serious" issues that the D70 has. There are some minor ones to be sure, but nothing I've read of heard worthy of being termed"serious". Care to elaborate?

I've searched through some of your previous posts and have concluded that you don't really know what you are talking about. Such as your claims of canon cameras producing "vidid" color verse nikons producing "neutral color". Or not being able to photograph inside with a f4 lens. I shoot indoors everyday with an f/4 lens. Manual controls worthless on a compact camera? Exactly how so? I used them all the time on my Canon G2. Your posts referring to "serious issues" with the D70 was a problem confined to a few early production cameras. No cameras sold today are exhibiting problems of any sort like what you mention.


And please, don't be a fanboy. Nikon glass is just as good as canon glass.

F4.5 really isn't that bad, especially in this price range. Up the ISO or use a flash.

Well when a flash isn't needed the images doesn't look as good. I was using my dads V1 and the no flash images were better on it but you obviously don't have the 'full' manual stuff of the D70 I was also using. D70 infinitely quicker and a 'real' camera as oppose to the V1 even though quick by it's competitors standard.

To get a lower F2.8 lense would cost a bomb 😛

But yeah overall the D70 takes much better pictures.

I'm not sure I really understand. The V1 (sony?) has a lens ranging from 2.8-4, this being because the smaller sensor allows for a faster lens in a more compact body. The 18-70 is 3.4-4.5. It's only a half stop slower.

Night shot.
Shot with a kit lens without a tripod. Not a great shot but not bad with a 1/6s or 1/4s Shutter (can't remember) and no tripod.

I don't think you read the right post about those issues.
And, Canon does produce vivid colors in 'compact cameras'.
It's just a personal preference. I'm not saying that's better or the other way around. It's just the way it is.
F4 lens sure works fine only if you use flash or tripod. Without it, how can you take a picture with that kind of dark lens even with high ISO levels (Well, this doesn't apply to Dslr cameras. I'm talking about compact cameras)
Oh and Nikon glass sure is as good as Canon glass, but once we talk about L lens, it's different.

And please, don't be a fanboy. Nikon's D70 does have flaws. It's a known fact with various sample pictures from real people. Even Nikon admitted it. Why can't you?

Why are you comparing D70 over V1?
D70 is a dslr camera whereas V1 is a compact camera.

BTW,
When using compact cameras, you should always get light lens. Unlike dslr cameras, you can't really up the ISO level due to its small sensor creating too much noise. Dslr cameras wouldn't really have much of problems with F4 lens as ISO level of 1600 can be used. However, compact cameras produce a lot more noise in ISO 400 level and usually that's the highest level of ISO in most of compact cameras.
Once compact cameras passes F3, it's a nightmare when taking indoor shots.
