You have a good point, however its lucky if they got that many...

There are more coming next week, some didn't land in the US in time for release day and we should see more each week...

Yup, and in order to get their fastest card you have to pay for the extra 256MB, which accounts for a very small portion of the performance increase in most cases.

The only asses ATI will be kicking will be those of the consumer, just like Nvidia today, with pricetags in the $600-$700 range. And since there are clearly plenty of people willing to pay $750+ for a top-end video card, I see no reason why those prices should fall.

Its the higher speed memory that has a different pin-out that you're paying the extra for. Not so much the extra 256MB of it. Nvidia had to revise it's 7800 PCB so that it could accomodate 16x32 GDDR3 modules as opposed to 8x32 GDDR3 modules. If you noticed, the 7800GTX uses 8 GDDR3 modules. 4 on each side of the card. The 7800GTX512 uses 8 double density 16x32 modules all on one side of the card. If you look at pics, there is no memory on the back of the 7800GTX512.

So, you're paying a premium for double density GDDR3 and a new revised PCB to accomodate it. The bonus is, all the memory is cooled evenly. I always felt the memory on the back of a card was suffering because its passively cooled, and the memory on the front has the luxury of being under the actively cooled HSF. But that's just me.

There are very few games that take advantage of the extra 256MB of mem. It's the super high speed of the memory that makes the card freaky faster. :D

Same thing for me when I tried to add the XT to my newegg cart when they first came out. I posted as such too. Think thats the "cut off" number or something? Seems strange that the exact same number was avail from newegg for both the XT, and GTX. Oh well, Im not paying $750 for a single card. 2x7800GT's would be a much smarter buy.

Very true and if you consider that only a handful of games would really need or benefit from SLI, it leaves the $750 video card market to people that are purely hardware enthusiast (e-peen competitors). For a GTX or previous gen owner, the best deal will be in a few weeks when and if the 512 GTX's come down in price because a lot of those e-peen guys will be offloading their GTXs in the FS forums.

Thats what I am waiting for. There is zero chance Im paying $750 for a card. I wouldnt mind paying $350 or so for a used BFG GTX. I have a SLI board, and SLI PSU already. But then I can wait a few more months too, and see what comes down the pipe from both companies. CoD2 and F.E.A.R. kicked my PC's butt though at my native res. I had to drop it in both games, something I dont like to do. Which is why I was thinking of adding another GTX.

Funny thing is that for the $350 upgrade to SLI, your performance will be within a small percentage of the guys running 2x512 MB SLI at a fraction of the cost. FEAR and CoD2 were tough on my setup as well but my native resolution is "only" 1680x1050 so a single GTX has been able to handle it decently so far. The game I really want more performance in is BF2 because the min. framerate drop is pretty bad (30s).

Zero chance of me paying 750.00 as well. You have a need to go SLI with that high native res on your widescreen so another GTX would benefit you greatly. I'm still on a 19" CRT so I usually have FEAR set to 12x10 max settings and it does ok. Besides, I have a P4 3.0 and my GTX is being held back by it as it is. SLI is not an option for me until Spring-ish. If Intel does not get its act together by then, here I come AMD.

I am actually upgrading to the 7800GTX 512MB from 7800GT SLI.
SLI is once again absolutly terrible even since last time I did 6800GT SLI.
Provide almost no benifit except in 3dmark05.

I find that hard to believe.

LOL this card sucks at 750... I have ~1400 bucks waiting to use to upgrade for the next 2-3 months but I dont want to waste it, and this card is about 150 dollars too much IMO

Just not worth selling a GTX 256 350 for, and still having to spend 400 bucks difference, when for 425 I could get another 256 GTX
