So bored with gaming these days, recommend me a new game

With all my friends gone or depressed this weekend, I'm not looking forward to going back to my tired old collection of PC games. Someone please maintain my sanity and recommend me something new!

What I have and am tired of:

Far Cry
BF2
Oblivion
HL2
CS:S

I would kill for a copy of Bioshock but it's not going to be out till next week. WoW type games just don't interest me.

My rig can handle anything out now (E6750, 8800GTS 320, 4GB), I just haven't been too impressed with anything lately to spend $50 on a game. Hopefully someone can recommend a game with a decent amount of play time and is immersive.

Haven't played either, they were 2 of the ones I saw on some review sites. Are they better than the reviews make thme look? Because I read the whole review and at the end was just bored with the whole idea. Maybe a gameplay video would help.

I was also considering Supreme Commander but I've never done well with RTS games.

I'm kinda in the same boat as you - I found Supreme Commander is actually holding my interest really well right now... if you watch the tutorials and just start the campaign on easy (still becomes a challenge as it goes on if you're not that good like me), it's really really fun... your dual core will be awesome with this thing (I only have a single core AMD at the moment, argh).

And another game that's been actually pretty entertaining is "Just Cause". The actual story is very repetitive and mediocre, and most of the missions are very ho-hum, but it's extremely fun stealing an airplane, and sky-diving, and exploring the provinces... the game is ENORMOUS... I'd recommend subscribing to gametap for a month (first month is 99 cents) for this - I wouldn't recommend buying the game from the store for retail, but 99 cents for a month of it is a great idea.

You might be interested in Overlord. It's short, sweet, and I haven't laughed at a computer game before this one in I couldn't tell you how long.

I will tell you I played the entire game through 2x, and it was short. Beat it the second time in ~10 hours. So if you're waiting for bioshock, Overlord might tide you over. I borrowed the copy from a friend and liked it so much I actually spent money on my own copy just to support the developers.

C'm ooon, c'm ooon bioshock. /twitches

Get a GameTap.com subscription -- they have or are about to get Overlord.

Plus Sam & Max and the new Tomb Raider.

Plus a bunch of older games you may have missed like Planescape: Torment, Icewind Dale 1-2, Baldur's Gate...

PS:T works great under XP, I just started playing it again (though mine is from CDs not tap).

I just went out and got Rainbox Six: Vegas. It was only $20, much more my style than $50 and should tide me over till Bioshock. I'll let you know how it is.

Enough, I will post more when you get done with those.

Well it's a fun game, nothing revolutionary about it though. The controls took a while to get used to, but overall it's not bad.

When I closed the game I got a BSOD though, and shortly after restarting I got a BAD_POOL_CALLER BSOD, so I guess I'll be doing some memory testing today.

I have to agree about overlord.
I wasn't feeling too good last night, had a pretty bad day.
I started up overlord last night and just had to start laughing, left me in a good mood.
Not many games that can do that to me.

Are you kidding me? The campaign is short as hell (what, 5 missions per side?), and for each race, the campaign missions are almost exactly the same, with the exception of the last few missions.

I was severely disappointed by Supreme Commander.

the problem with it is that good feeling goes away when you start doing the same thing over-and-over ... and it is ridiculous to have to replay missions to harvest lifeforce to get the really good gear.

what finally killed it for me - beside the lack of anytime save and an ingame map - was the cruddy story ... it started out cool with the 7 sins parody then deteriorates into a "deus ex machina" cop-out ending.

it could have been a gem ... the minions almost make the game worth the price.

Meh, same boat. I managed to score Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory for $10 and TItan Quest for $13. Finished SC, don't plan on going back. I'm about 2 hours from finishing Titan Quest and just want it to end... Diablo minus battle.net = dud for me.

I thought about getting GRAW2, but after seeing the reviews, I'm not in the mood to be "raped" harder than I was in GRAW1, which I really enjoyed. Oh, and tell them to stop using Mexico as the setting...

Overlord, thought about getting it then decided not to since nothing about it really pulls at me. Would make for a good "bide me over" game, but been spending so much, I don't need another $50 hole.

Come on Bioshock...

Did you ever play Mafia? Mafia was an awesome game, a little like GTA, but more serious, and a better story.

If you want to try something different, you could play a true RPG. This Baldurs Gate, Icewind Dale, and NeverWinter Nights collection should keep you busy for the next year. Baldurs Gate 2 is my favorite game.

I've been reading your enthusiastic Vampire recommendations for a while now and I just recently started playing it; so far so good :) I'm definitely enjoying it. It's funny, I can't help but watch the spastic goth dancers for several minutes at a time :D

Ya like shooters? Try chronicles of riddick, very vaired in environments and theres a ton of people to interact with. I mean in a prison theyve managed to fit in inmates/monsters/aliens/mechs as well as the usual guards, and its all part of daily life at butcher bay, no alien invasion or anything in the story.

Also if you haven't played dungeon keeper II, try that out. Its great fun, kept me up till 4am playing it anyways. Campaign is great! Also challenging at times.
