So basically, current gen video cards are near worthless for under 1600x1200

Sure a 7800GT would be worth it. 4X AA or 6X AA would be possible in pretty much all games, TrAA, etc. You'll get your money's worth with a 6800GT, 7800GT, etc.

I picked up a 7800GT (upgrade from 6800NU) for my 1280x1024 LCD a few days ago (came today, will install tomorrow). Even the 7800GT struggles at Battlefield 2@1280x1024/4xAA/16xAF. http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2607&p=3

If I recall, AT runs all their tests at 16xAF now, or 8xAF if 16x not available in-game. I'm pretty sure BF2 supports 16x.

Oh, and don't forget, transparent AA and H.264 acceleration too!

Ok... sounds good. I took a look at your rig (nice).

I have the same hard drive... runs fast for me, I love it.
I just ordered some crucial ballistix (incase I need to overclock for the 7800).

It seems that you have not overclocked at all, no bottlenecking?

I'd go for a 7800GT to play at 1280x1024, too. For now it'll handle max settings perfectly. Further down the line, it'll still be able to handle heavy loads at that resolution.

Sell it here on the forums. Just be prepared to ship first if you do since you're fairly new here (if you already have good heat than that wouldn't be a problem).

Otherwise I'd Ebay it. That's where my old cards go if I don't sell them on Anandtech.

AF is no problem with good recent GPU's (6600 and above), minimal FPS loss, try an FPS test at x16 then with it off and you'll see. The real FPS killer is AA. I have AFx16 on most games with no probs.

I just bought an X800GTO2 for gaming at 1280 x 1024. SHould be better than my current 6600GT, and allow me to use AA/AF on a regular basis. I'd say that a 7800GT would be a nice upgrade, especially if you want to use AA.

i have an x700pro as well and i can roughly play newer games at 1280x1024 at max with some minor AA and AF...i guess a little more horsepower like an x800 or 6800 and higher won`t hurt....especially with high AA/AF....

It depends on what card you already have. With a x700, the new cards will offer a big boost even at 1280 res. If you already have a high end x800 or 6800 series card, then the new cards will not bring much benefit in most games.

Yeah good luck playing HL2, COD2 or FEAR at 1280X1024, unless you turn off all of the eye candy and even then....

I think the 7800GT would be your best bet at that resolution. A GTX or XT would not give you that much more at the resolution for the cost.

Look at a x1800xl also. They OC quite well. A fair amount of people have been able to OC their x1800xl to x1800xt speeds. You'll miss out on having an extra 256mb ram, that's about it.

Woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning? I know what you are saying in general, but everyone's responses in this thread were helpful and nice. Most of the ATI vs Nvidia threads aren't started by members who need help, but by people wanting to argue an issue, which is fine as well. I think the video forum is very useful even if there are debates, it isn't our fault we don't have as simple of a situation as the CPU forum's "buy AMD". We actually have a competitive market here, and as such there will be debate.

I'm limited to 1280 x 1024 as well by my LCD monitor, but I'm still running a 7800GTX, and I'm in EVGA's step-up queue for the 512MB. If you look at benches of some of the newer games, using 4X AA, you'll see that even the fastest card can drop significantly.

From AT's review of the 512MB GTX....

These numbers are from 1280 x 1024 w/ 4x AA
F.E.A.R = 45 fps
Black and White 2 = 36 fps
Splinter Cell: CT = 62.7 fps

These numbers are all just averages. When playing through Quake 4 on my 256MB GTX (using 4X Tr. SSAA), there were some points at which I dropped below 20 fps. It was rare, but it happened. Games won't be getting any easier on your system in the coming months.

I think a 7800GT would be worth it. Turn on 8xSTSAA and 16xAF and you will really stress it.
