Not arsehole at all, they started it by giving him a BS incorrect number in response to his FOI request. They got what they deserve IMO.

I once bought £5 worth of different 1p sweets using 500 pennies so I am with the wheelbarrow guy on this one.

Hey, I figure it was a banner day for the teller. Spend the day dealing with grumpy people or, get to count money all day?
I'm guessing wheelbarrow guy was pretty grumpy if he had to wait while they counted. Although that would probably have made it more fun.

Seriously I'd have dicked around with him all day.

I guess he means that you cant expect someone to take a random pile of money in exchange for something.

If you want to buy something from me you have to show me that you've given me the right amount of money before leaving with the goods.

If "counting the coins was too much for the machines" they are fucked I guess. Don't put all $3,000 worth in at once, you dinkus.

I bought a modem back in the early 90's and i had probably about 75$ worth of coins for the 100 dollar purchase, they kept telling me 'you know, we don't have to accept all this change'

He had to stay with them until they counted the entire amount so I think he screwed himself.

I do not think he cared :)

Seems like a "If you are going to waste my time, I'll waste yours" deal to begin with of course.

That's not how it works. I hand you the money, its up to you to accept it that the amount is what I say it is, or count it out to verify yourself. I don't have to show you the correct amount, I just hand you the money, or, in this case, several wheelbarrows of it, all legal tender.

Never seen the coin rolls inside the paper containers?

In either case it would be like giving a bus driver paper money when they only accept coins or a large bill when the store doesn't accept anything like at after a certain time or if you purchased a very small amount.

In either case this has been done before.

Idiotic, futile, juvenile and not the least bit original. And it's that last thing for which I find him most guilty.

He payed more than he needed to. He wasted a ton of his own time and effort and he still had to pay. Does he think he won because they had to count it? They got paid for that time, he didn't.
But the issue here is that this kind of thing has been done to death. He's not the first guy to think of it. Or the second. Or the hundredth or probably even the thousandth. I'm sure in his research to discover the legality of this he came across the stories of all the other people who have done the exact same thing and still went ahead and did it anyway.

Having me count it with you present is showing me that its the correct amount. What I'm saying is that you can't just dump a load of cash and swan out.

Not if you want a receipt or any proof that you've paid anyways.

How would you deal with this if you were the teller?

I think I'd get him to count it out for me then make him wait while I checked it.

I applaud him for making his point. The problem with these government entities whose sole purpose for existing is to serve the public is that they have forgotten they serve the public and seem to think the public serves them. That is wrong. When they go out of their way to make contacting them difficult or impossible which they certainly did in this case then they are intentionally violating the public trust. They have a responsibility to be accessible and responsive to the public that they are here to serve. :beercheers:

Nah, they had a system in place for the public to contact them. This guy just wanted to cut in line ahead of other taxpayers. He's a jackass.

What point did he make exactly? That he was willing to waste his own time and his own money to make a fool of himself? He still had to pay what he owed. If anything, it makes the governments point. No matter how much you bitch and moan, they're still going to collect their money and any attempts to wriggle out of it will fail.

FOIA requests are not meant to get a DMV phone number. Guy is a total tit.
