The only difference between men and boys, is the price of the toys :D

So does that mean my Acura TL makes me a man? :)

not sure, but my 350z does

My genatalia makes me a man. I don't need to replace it with automobiles. It does fine on its own.

I don't think he ever said it'd run (playably) on a GF256, just that it was based on a GF256's feature set.

Yeah, to compare Valve to id is simply not right. id was produced a number of great games since Doom 2, and Valve has produced NONE! I'm not saying that HL2 won't be awesome, but I just don't think that you can compare Valve to id - Not until Valve has a track record that comes close to matching id's.

That's what I thought, but didn't Half Life ship on October 1998? That's 6 years, unless it's 2006. Maybe I've been out of the loop for a while
Oh yeah. Stupid me.

Bring out the dunce hat.:)

When it was originally made, it was built around Geforce 256 capabilities.

Over the years, as graphics technology grew, they also added to the game - killer shadows, advanced shaders, high resolution textures.

Most likely, minimum requirement will be a Geforce3 to run it on all settings low and run at 30fps.

The source leak and the beta leak were two different things. I have the beta version, but it's not exactly functional as a single player. All that I can do is create a server then walk through the maps. The textures look really nice, but the monsters do not look as good as the ones in HL1, and the shiny water is really laggy (9600XT). It looks like it still uses the Quake engine even though it's not supposed to. Most Quake commands still work, and the game can be rendered in either D3D or OpenGL.

20 million copies at 50$ a pop.
That is a billion dollars my friend. Even Half Life 1 sold 8 million copies and about 5 times as many people in the world have computers today as did back then. ANyways it has been 5 years in development unless you count all the time on Half Life 1.Which alot of that was convenient to have since alot of stuff is the same or similar.

they arent making anywhere near 50 bucks per copy. they have to pay for manufacturing, packaging, get the media transported, then the stores have to make a profit as well, as well as anyone else involved in the process (eg activision over idsoft)

They are probably also counting on recouping some of the costs by licensing out the game engine. But I'm not sure how much they'll get out of it since id is the king of 1st person licensing.

What is it with Valve and September release dates? Did you mean September 2004 or 2005?

Has anyone else seen the outdated required specs for HL2 used on a games site which will remain nameless? Did they write the specs when HL2 was due for release the first time all those decades ago? :D

1 Player Min Specs
PIII 700MHz
DX6 - compatible graphics card
128MB RAM

'Optimal' Spec
P4 2Ghz
128MB GeForce 4 Graphics Card
256MB RAM

Wasn't HL2 due for release in September 2003 so please forgive me if I don't believe it will be released this year! ;)

I meant September 2nd, 2004

Maybe it will be delayed longer, who knows....everything is possible. But i've always stuck to the reasoning that I will not upgrade my videocard until at least a few games I like, that require the firepower, will have come out. So far it's only Far Cry. I can even play UT2K4 at 1280x1024 without problems (albeit without AA/AF). But I am waiting to upgrade until this fall/winter so I can enjoy Doom 3, HL2, STALKER, etc, and Far Cry. Yet so many people bought good videocards long time ago, but since 2 years ago of 9700Pro and until today, except for Far Cry, there hasnt been one game that warranted an upgrade. So while people went from geforce 3 to geforce 4 to 5900/9800pro and now they'll have to upgrade once again to play these intense games, while waiting all this time for something so powerful to take advantage of their cards (that really hasnt come yet until this fall I hope), I will simply jump from 8500 to the new cards today....that is something to think about. Should you upgrade in anticipation of the new game(s) you'd like to play, or only when that game comes out? I think the answer is clear and HL2 is a perfect example.

How long have we been waiting for DNF now? Ten years or something and they've got nothing to show for it? Insane? That's a joke.

Although I mostly agree with what your saying I don't think most people with 5900/9800 video cards will be forced to upgrade. For example a 5900/9800 delivers very playable frame rates with Far Cry and it's been mentioned countless times how well nv hardware (nv35 and later) is performing with Doom 3!

I also think that sometimes even the most highly anticipated game can suffer from delays. Back in the days when I owned N64 and played countless nights of Goldeneye, I highly anticipated the release of Perfect Dark. Unfortunately it kept getting delayed and I grew older along with my friends. By the time Perfect Dark ended up coming out, its lush and amazing graphics were superseded or equaled by many games at the time. PS2 and Gamecube were just around the corner and the game's replay value suffered, especially once Xbox and Halo replaced all that console first person shooter goodness.

If I look back at the past, Super Mario 64, Goldeneye, Gran Tourismo, Metal Gear Solid were all able to capture the act of videogaming as a total experience. And I think that a large part of that experience is being immersed in the environment which is shaped by none other than graphics. Of course, sound also adds a great deal to atmosphere. I dont doubt that HL2 is going to be a great game, but if it had come out 1 year ago it would have been that much better! Now not only does it have to suffer from not so jaw dropping graphics, but the competition will be fiece with STALKER, Doom 3, Road to Rome and Splinter Cell 3 supposed to ship before end of the year. I just hope there are no more delays or what was considered original and jaw dropping 1-1.5 years ago could only be just "great" today. I mean how is it that most amazing games can take 1-2.5 years to develop and Valve is taking THIS LONG? I sure hope the game at least offers a bonus HL1 cd packaged with it so at least those who havnet played the first one can experience the transformation and decide whether or not the wait was worth it.
