So, any hope for a graduating computer science student with a 2.75 GPA?

I will be graduating this semester and I am looking for a job. Going to the usualy places, Career Center, Monster, Hotjobs, FlipDog.com. What do you think my prospects are?
 
If you can show potential employers projects that you've worked on, software that you've written and internships you've had, and you can carry on a decent conversation and sound intelligent and motivated during an interview, you're GPA isn't going to matter much.

Gpa will matter less after you first job as well.
 
You still have to serve your internship at Rallye's. If you don't slip and break your neck there you will be eligible to join the rea world workforce. Good luck.
 
I know a kid that had a 2.7 got hired on at lockheed martin in California and is now making 46k. I'd go out, try to get jobs...and if you can't get any, just lie and say your GPA is a 3.7 and see what kind of responses you get because hey...you got nothign to lose eventually..if you have a 2.7 you're not going to get the job anyways....
In my experience most employers wont' check...

What was it? My friend has a really really low GPA (he won't tell, he just says below 2.4) and its a daily thing for me to encourage him. You can PM it to me if you like.

My GPA was 3.42, but I told interviewer from the boeing company that I had GPA of 3.5. After getting hired, they corrected my GPA to 3.42 in my personnel file.

So, yes they do check.

I do think it is all about how you handle yourself during the interviews, but I do think your GPA will be a factor (could be small) especially if there is a large pool of job seekers.

Uhhhhhhhh...no.

Don't ever lie about stuff on your resume.
Sure...there is some leeway in the way you can present certain things on your resume.
But lying about an easily checked fact...OH BOY is that ever a dumb idea.

If you can get an interview, you can easily turn your GPA issue around in several ways that will impress a potential employer:

* Coursework didn't hold your interest since it wasn't challenging enough
* Tend to excel at individual and team projects since it was more hands-on, rather than the abstract nature of tests.
* Some other lovely type of spin

The key is...sell yourself, but don't lie!

BTW: It's a common truth that the BULK of the decision to hire or not hire a candidate is made within the first minute of an interview.

BTW2: Therefore: 1.) dress appropriately, 2.) be neat and well-groomed, 3.) speak cogently and complete sentences, 4.) make eye contact, and 5.) smile and some enthusiasm (energetic individuals usually get the job)

I'm not sure, But it isn't too hard, I think all they had to do was ask for my transcripts or GPA from Embry- Riddle Aeronautical U.

 
heh, I wouldn't lie for some job that does extensive background checks such as boeing, lockheed, ball aerospace, raytheon...they will check...but for a place like qwest, AT&T a few other places...they won't bother.

The other thing I would do is if for some reason your last semester GPA was good...and your cumulative isn't...I'd put down my last semester GPA so you wouldn't technically be lying. If asked about it I'd be like thats what I got last semester...
 
Oh yeah, I know for a fact IBM doens't check either. I know a kid who put down he had a 4.0 and he only had a 3.2...they were so impressed w/ the 4.0 in the interview they hired him right away. The other guy he was working with at IBM was hired and had his GPA drop below a 2.5 and they were never any wiser. They hired him becuase he was cisco certified in high school. I guess all IBM around here looks for is something impressive on your resume...

1 more thing..yeah, it's real easy to play off a bad GPA in an interview...the problem is getting the interview w/ a bad GPA. My philosophy is if I can get the interview the job is probably mine...the problem is trying to get the interview when HR people just scan resumes and keep the ones with above a 3.4.
 
Is it bad to leave your GPA out of our resume, if it's not very impressive (or you don't want to lie about it)?

Will employers more likely toss them aside?
 
You won't get an interview most of the time if you leave your GPA out. I basically sent my resume to 30 companies and got 0 responses. So I threw my GPA on there...I dind't think it was so great(a 3.2) and then got 5 responses in 1 week. Got 2 phone interviews and 3 emails saying the positions had been filled. This is out of about sending it to like 10 companies. I ended up gettin the 2 jobs I got interviewed for and took the higher paying one...

I just graduated from GT with a 2.88 in CS.. I got 1 interview no full time job... its basically hopeless

i've had a bunch of internships/part time work too.

Don't feel hopeless. The market for I.T. hiring is a bit slow at the moment. Hopefully, it picks up soon, though.

Regarding the G.P.A. - I've worked with plenty of 4.0 types who were intelligent, but may have experienced problems tying their shoes. Companies should also be checking a person's E.Q. instead of the I.Q. 😉
