It won't make you as competative... but then again, a GPA is only a tangible way of measuring things...

There are many smart people with low GPA's, there are many smart people with high GPA's, the difference is what you say in your interview, what you do in your spare time and how you present at interviews. If you speak as though your vocabulary is rich, thats good. If you can speak in a very relaxed manner getting your ideas accross, then you will often times get a job. The key to getting a job is your communications skills. Confidence, humor, and a few good stories about your past work will often times get you a job the "smarter" person won't get.

Don't worry. The worst that happens is you take some hourly sh*t job to make $$$ and pay bills until you can find work in your field.

Things that matter more than the GPA:

Experience
Attitude
Communications skills

Always call after you send in yer resume (I usually wait 5 days or so), and get to know people who know people. It's much better to send a resume to Mr. Smith and be able to say in ye cover letter, "Mr. Johnson recommend I contact you..." than to just send a resume to an HR department or "cold call" people. Of course don't rule out cold calling either. You never know, you might get lucky.

The economy sucks major donkey dick right now and companies are basicaly hiring to replace someone who left and that's 'bout it. Don't give up though. Just keep sending stuff out.

Here's my story i a nutshell. Graduated in May '01 (radio/TV production). Moved to LA in June (from Indiana). Left LA in Jan 02- $2k in debut (only was able to get an "internship" and one freelance gig). Started working at local BlockBuster in March 02 (back in Indiana). Started working nights at local post house (May 02). Got hired by CART in Aug 02 (makin' bank and lovein' life). Got Laid off by CART in Dec 02. Job hunt started again in Dec 02. Currently gettin unemployment, but I'll either be working at CompUSA or Block Buster in a couple weeks (until I get a job in my industry again). Started editing indie film in Jan 03 (no $$$ in it, but it's good experience and if the movie gets buzz that could land me a job). Movin' back to LA in Feb 04 (I want a rematch :D).

Keep yer head up and remember that $8/hr is better than $0/hr.

In my experience most employers wont' check...

Very bad advice, I wouldnt try to lie to a prospective employer, he will learn about that eventually - besides doesnt it state the GPA on the Uni diploma (no clue how it is in the US)

Look, you're not gonna get an interview anyways, which means you don't get the job. If you lie sure, theres a chance they find out, but whats the worst that happens? That's right...you don't get the job. Now if you at least have the chance to get the job, even if it's a 5% chance, it's better to lie and get a 5% shot than have a 0% shot. That being said, most large companies hire a background check company that checks employment history and verifies a degree and that's it. The background check company most of the time doesn't get your resume. You take a separate drug test conducted by a different company. So what it boils down to is the information sharing is very poor between the background check companies and the employers. Unless you're gettin a government job or are being hired w/ a defense contractor that you need security clearance I'd say it's pretty safe to lie. I mean most cases they dont' have a way of obtaining the information and ask you to bring a transcript for them. When a company does a background check on you it will come back clear or not clear and they don't compare it to your resume. Hell I know people that are managers at some very reputable companies and they look at the resume, hire based on the interview and the resume, then send you off to get a background check and a drug test and that's the end of it. If something goes wrong like you failed a drug test they'd know about it. Otherwise they're never any wiser...

As a sidenote, a lot of the times when you go into a job, especially an engineering job or software job you're going to have no idea how to do something anyways and you figure it out and research and get the job done. Half the battle is knowing where to look. I know a guy who spent a year looking for a job, couldn't find anything. He then threw .net on his resume even though he was clueless with it. Before the interveiw he read up on it, made up some BS about how he used it to do some contracting work and he got hired.

They've evidently changed the meaning of the word honest to mean "tells the truth when it's convenient".

ANd it benifits you.

IT's ok to lie if it doesn't hurt any one.

It all depends on what is is.

Threads like these make me increasingly happy that I decided to get experience rather than go to school full-time.

I actually find this disturbing..

There is nothing wrong with 2.75, it's average. :Q It shouldn't be very much harder, if at all.. to find a job.

is 2.75 your cumulative GPA? if the GPA of only your computer science classes is better maybe you should put that on your resume instead, and just say "CS GPA". But if not, you can definitely get a job with that GPA. Mine was lower than 2.75 and I got a nice job. If you have extra curricular activities and some work experience, definitely use that as leverage in your interviews. Some companies make a big deal about GPA (usually those defense companies), which will make it hard to get your foot in the door. But there are plenty of companies out there who will be willing to give you shot if you have the skills that they are looking for.

I know plenty of people with good GPAs (3.4+) who are getting paid less than me. The economy is just in a bad state, not to mention the fact that a lot of companies these days are looking to outsource a lot of work overseas. The job market will pick up eventually.
