Will the scab be naturally cleaned out as they nail grows?

There is probably some blood mixed in with the nail matrix, so it will have to just grow out. The rest of it should breakdown normally as per a bruise.

Yeah, toe nails grow much slower than finger nails. That's not really bad - looks like the matrix is not damaged heavily, so it will regrow.

I put a motorcycle stand on my big toe, and, while wriggling in pain, jerked the motorcycle to free the foot, and took off most part of the nail completely. Unfortunately the base was damaged too severely, and the nail never grew back to pretty pink. It has a yellowish hue now 🙁 Went to see the doc, and he said there's nothing he could do short of artificial nails to cover it up. You see it a lot on guys in auto bodyshops or those who work with heavy machinery - once you pinch the nail hard enough, kiss a pretty pink look goodbye.

What? Are you sure about that? Discoloration from pressure? As opposed to say... a nail fungus? There isn't much they can do for nail funguses either, which may be why he said that, but they can take a culture and give you a drug that may make it go away. They could also rip the nail out again and have you keep the area clean. From pressure though... that surprises me (however I'm not a doctor).

Bleh. I went snowboarding hte first time and my toe really hurt the whole day because of the boot. Never really bothered to fix it and said just suck it up. I looked at it later and the WHOLE thing was purple after the weekend. It looked worse than what you showed us.

The whole nail fell off 3 months later. Uhhh yeah. I had a really thin (paper thin) new nail that I wrapped up for a few days so I wouldn't die in pain if I bumped into something with my foot.

dude!

I just did this with basketball shoes. It hurts like a bitch. One toe is all black and the other is clear but draining liquid somehow.

Did it hurt when the nail came off?

thanx for making the image top recent 25 😛

toe's fine, doesn't bother me, but im sure it gets looks if i walk around in sandals.

another q: should i leave it 'open'? or is wearing socks + shoes okay?

I wouldn't be surprised if the whole nail fell off in a few weeks. I slammed my finger in a dishwasher a couple years ago, and the nail looked pretty much the same as yours. It fell off a few weeks later. I can't remember how long it took for the new nail to grow to full length, but it was pretty strange having no nail there.

Edit: What exactly caused the drill to fall on your foot?

Drill was on ladder, I guess the ground shook ever so slightly and the drill fell. Was kinda weird, like I was watching it fall slowly, but didn't move...

Anyways, Around 10/01/09

AAHHH wtf it just fell off GROSSS
