I occasionally chew tobacco, I was looking into trying snus but I wanted to see if anyone here had any opinions on it before I go and import some.

Import? I was in Orlando yesterday and I saw Camel Snus at a gas station, I didn't know what it was though 'till I googled it after seeing your thread.

It's only available in certain markets, how much is it?

The american versions are test marketing, it's originally from Sweden.

Dude how lucky are you...

Someone gave me some that they brought back from a Europe trip (referring to your PM).

However, I'll be in Orlando tomorrow through Friday and will see if I can find some :D, what are the odds.

If you happen to be in Disney, head to Downtown Disney and go to the Hess gas station that's right by Downtown Disney Westside and Disney Quest. That's where I saw it.

BTW OP, I live a short drive away (Tampa), how badly do you want it :p

EDIT: Found this online:

Plus American snus is -gram for gram- much, MUCH more expensive too even without S&H.
If Camel and Marlboro snus is the same as PM's previous effort called Taboka, it's nothing more than a weak nicotine delivery vehicle with industrial strength flavoring. Effective in an emergency but not really what I would consider a conveyor of pleasure.

My roommate is/was really into it. I have no idea how much he pays for it but I know he has to order it from somewhere. He's cut back now and only uses it when he is stressed. I'll PM you with further details.

Aww I'm so lucky. Haha, well let me know via PM. Otherwise I'll import from Sweden and let you know how that goes. Pricing is very reasonable on the sites I found. $2 to $3.50 per can.

Edit: Perhaps I''ll just go ahead and import some, share the love with anyone interested on AT.

Not quite sure what snus has to do with my nose.

Snus is very strong.

When I was living in Sweden it was always funny to give some General (brand - strongest of them too) to some American's. They would first of all put it in the lower lip (you put snus in the upper lip) and they would spit (you don't spit with snus).
Then it was inevitable that they would get sick and throw up. Always made us laugh.

I used to use the single packet stuff (comes in the tin, but each "serving" is in a small presized packet).

Too bad you didn't post this about 3 weeks ago. One of my friends was in from Sweden and he is a big snus user. I could have easily had him leave one or two.

I forget the brand I used to use once in a while. It was a purple tin if my memory is correct (was about a decade ago).

That's okay, there are three sites that sell snus, and like I said they're reasonably priced so I'll probably just order from one of them.

thought I'd revive this thread instead of making a new one.

Apparently Camel Snus is sold in Columbus, Oh... I'm not exactly a heavy dipper, but I got into it to help with my studies and it definitely does help me relax and focus when I need to, but also the low amount I do makes me enjoy basically everything so much more. :)
I started with regular dip maybe a couple times a week, then got into pouches so I didn't have to worry about having shit stuck in my teeth if I dipped walking to class. And then on my way out of Columbus to go back home, the gas station I stopped at to get brake fluid had the Camel Snus fridge on the counter. I got a thing of Frost and I love this stuff. Small pouches (0.4g), 20 per pack, but it's perfect size for me based on how often I do it. Sadly, how good these things are has made me pick it up a little bit and I do it a couple times a day, but that's still not all that much compared to regular dippers. I want to keep it at this level or less, and I think I can manage that pretty easily.

I've looked into importing some, but decided that I'm pretty happy with Camel's Snus. And since it's still technically Swedish and the Swedes control everything regarding Snus, I trust it's just as good of quality, just with more focus on flavor (although flavor, I guess, still has to be food-grade flavoring).
The no spitting is especially nice because I can just leave one in all class and it helps with class a lot.

But is there good actual Swedish import snus that has flavorings comparable to Camel's offering? The Frost is a damn good flavor. I looked on one import site and it seems almost everything is natural flavor, sometimes with a hint of some other flavor, but haven't found a good-sounding pure flavored snus. I'm not looking for tobacco flavor. Not my thing. The assorted mints (I had been using wintergreen dip pouches) are just fine and dandy, and I'm sure a fruit/citrus flavor would work too if it was designed to be only that flavor and not just a 'natural' flavor with a hint of citrus or fruit or something.

Snus has been a great find for me. American snuff had been giving me strong headaches along with various other problems. In my search for a healthier option, I found snus ! The tobacco used in snus is cured in a way that keeps carcinogens down to extremely low levels. After over 200 years of use in Sweden, there is no link between snus use and oral cancer ! In Sweden snus production is regulated under food processing laws and contains only ingredients that are approved for human consumption. I've been using snus for over a month. I have no more headaches and my general sense of well being has improved dramatically. I was having a reaction to the chemicals used in american snuff, not to the tobacco itself.

As far as flavors go, there are some great ones, and there are some really bad ones.

For a natural type flavor, General Original Portions are great.

For a sweeter flavored snus, I recommend General Wintergreen, Skruf Cranberry, or Probe Whiskey. Note that General Wintergreen can only be purchased online from swedishsnus.com . You can use the store locator on that site to see if there is a retail store near you that carries it though.

The Off Road brand may look tempting because of the flavors offered, but in general that product line tastes terrible. You could give it a shot, but don't get your hopes up too high.

Thumbs up for snus !

I've since moved from Camel Snus (well, still get it on occasion, as the really small portions are sometimes perfect for more of the 'wake me up quickly' aspect), to Triumph Snus. Triumph is sold by Lorillard (makers of Newport and Kent, among others), but made by Swedish Match, who also make the General Brand and a load of other brands. Lorillard simply imports it and sells it under their name. They are also white portions like Camel Snus, but 1g portions and 24 portions in a 'tin' (nice plastic puck, whatever they call them). Mint is a good flavor, but sweet. I think Swedish Match made it sweet to Americanize it, get the market tested. Triumph is hard to find, I know its being tested in some areas of Ohio... Columbus especially, which is convenient since I go to school here and live here 3/4 of the year. :)

I've been meaning to buy some of the General Brand but had trouble finding good flavors. I hate original flavor tobacco. Well, never tried it as far as snus but original dip disgusts me, always went wintergreen when I briefly dipped before switching to snus. Nice thing is, one puck/can/tin lasts me over a week typically, very infrequently used... couple a day.
Gonna have to check out this swedishsnus.com, see if I can find a can of General that I think I might like.
But, can you explain the difference between portions and white portions?

-edit:
and is loose snus comparable to the messiness of dip? Or is it easy to pinch into a tight roll and place in your mouth, with the powder staying in place? Is it still no spitting then? Not spitting the juice is one thing, but if the powder gets mixed in.. not so sure I really want to ingest pure tobacco. ;)

Love the stuff. Got some Ettan 24g in my mouth ATM. So far Eucalyptus has been my favorite flavor.

I have always preferred wintergreen snuff and have never really liked copenhagen type flavors. With snus it is a different story for me. I would advise you to at least try a can of General Original Portions. It has a salty, peppery, lemony flavor that I grew to crave much like the craving you might get for roasted peanuts or buttered popcorn. The natural flavors of snus are far superior to the chemical taste of american snuff. American snuff tends to have vapors or fumes, while snus has aromas. Try a couple of portions a day for a week and you may aquire the taste for it, and be glad you did !

I have found that I prefer to use both a natural type flavor and a sweeter flavor at different times of the day.

The drawback to using swedishsnus.com is that you have to order a roll at a time I believe. It is very fresh though, so under refrigeration you'd use it all before it expired. If you really like wintergreen, the General Wintergreen will not disappoint you. That product was formulated to be sold in the USA, and the flavor is along the lines of the american type wintergreen we are used to. It does tend to burn a bit under the upper lip, so I just bottom lip it usually.

I realize Skruf Cranberry may not sound so appealing, but it actually is fantastic. The cranberry is fairly strong and blends perfectly with the tobacco taste for a surprisingly good flavor. Even your spit cup (if you use one) will smell great.

Original portions are produced with more moisture and thus the tobacco juice soaks into the teabag and turns it brown. This results in a jucier product with a stronger initial flavor. White portions are made by packing tobacco with less moisture into the bags. The juice does not run and the teabags remain unstained or white. White portions take longer before the flavor gets going, but they last longer than the original portions.

The loose snus is a very finely ground tobacco that takes some work to pack. It can be packed into a solid lump by hand, but a lot of people prefer to use a forming tool. I've heard the loose tobacco is excellent, but have only used the portions so far for convenience. If the loose snus is properly formed into a lump, no spitting is required just like the portions. Of course, you could always just pack a pinch into your bottom lip, but it is pretty messy and spitting would be a definite requirement.

Loose snus differs a lot between the brands.
Skruf Stark is generally extremely easy to pack, almost like clay, and I like the taste.
Downside being that it's a very small brand, so it's kinda hard to find, even here in Sweden.
General and Grov are quite easy to pack, and both taste quite nice(unless you're after "perfume snus").
Stay far away from Tre Ankare unless you enjoy the taste of ammonia.

Oh and there's a thing called(I think) a prismaster, I guess you can buy that online.
Auto-packer of sorts, never used one though, so I can't say how effective they are :)

I can check a Swedish forum that I frequent for links to sites that sell snus.

Apparently this store is good, never shopped there myself though, so don't even think about suing me if it's not ;)

I've been wondering what this stuff is. I always see signs for it at the local gas stations when I'm getting gas.

After reading this thread I don't think someone would be interested in a smoke break. I would think they would be interested in stopping smoking, hell even stopping dipping, and using snus as a "healthier" alternative. I'm not saying snus is a miracle drug, but everything I've read in this thread is true. There is a very low level of carcinogins, there is no evidence that snus causes oral cancer, and there is definately no chance of lung or throat cancer.

There is also more niccotine in snus then there is in chewing tobacco and cigs, so what excuse would someone have to smoke instead of use snus?
