Snowpocalypse 2.0...brace for it midwest

The wife called, freaking out and wondering if we should go buy a kerosene or propane heater. I'm hoping our gas fireplace will be enough in the event of a loss of power.

Junior year of HS ended the Wed after July 4th.
Had now school in Feb at all and into early March.
3wks off due to storms + the Winter break

When living in Lawrence township in '00/01, we lost power for 2 days.
Apartment had a gas fireplace that kept us going. Closed off all bedrooms and bunked family in living room. Downstairs family did not have the fireplace, we asked them to come upstair and blanket in the dining room. Gas H/W heater so there was showers by flashlight.

I so wanted to put one of these in, but went over budget in two many other places. Had to cut it out. Still might consider adding one in again some day.

It was the first thing I bought when we started on the new house. In fact I had it tucked away in a garage before we even finished with the design and chose a builder.
 
The only part I dont like about this is how jacked up the bus scheduling gets. I ride the bus to/from work and with any decent amount of snow, the schedules go right down the shitter.

Yeh, you guys see way more ice and wicked thunderstorms than we do, so I can understand the priority. The generator itself is about $4,000 right? How much extra in labor and parts did it cost you to have it set and wired in the house?
 
I need to get some 2 stroke oil and a few more gallons of gas... sounds like I might be "stuck" at home, one can hope!!!!

this definitely would sum up my view.

Toledo is in an interesting little spot. Nobody is sure if we're going to actually get ice, but if the ice falls, we're likely to get a quarter inch or more. Hopefully that's not enough to bring down power everywhere, but with the ice and winds some places will surely lose power.


One thing to keep in mind: with no power, outside is a natural freezer to keep food until ready to be thawed.
Basements will probably be a natural refrigerator.

Not sure if this lightens the mood or not.

Regardless, I'd rather have two feet of snow than significant ice.
 
Work's closing early here in STL.

Been rainy all AM, temps are dropping. North part of the city's getting sleet now and everything on the ground is starting to freeze.

Got my can filled up yesterday, for the snow thrower though. Not shoveling this much snow again (ran out of gas during last storm)

I think I paid around that amount for it. Would have to go back through my receipts and look. Everything for it was on the pallet it arrived on so there weren't any extra parts required. If I remember right it cost me around $350 in labor to have them wire it in. I have a local company come out and do yearly maintenance on it for $80.

I have probably 6-7gallons in the shed as well as at least 1 quart of 2 stroke oil.... but I have three 5 gallon tanks that are empty ... may as well fill em up 🙂

I don't have a snow thrower, I'll just shovel my driveway/sidewalk ... or if it's really bad, I'll shovel my sidewalk, and compact the snow down with my sleds on my driveway ... hehehehe

I cheaped out and just got a 9kw "portable" (yeah right!) generator, installed a plug outside the garage which is connected to a power transfer switch connected to 15 circuits on my panel. Just plug the generator into the plug outside the garage, flick the power transfer switch, and 75% of the circuits in my home are live.

Not enough juice to power air conditioning, but more than enough to keep the the furnace on, kegerator cold, and the plasma hot.

Including labor and 4 five gallon gas tanks (5 gallons lasts about 12 hours), I spent about $1500 on that setup. Not a bad investment and significantly cheaper than a natural gas powered auto setup.

I lose electricity about once every 2 years, so an auto setup really is overkill for my needs.
 
Oh please please please please can we actually get a decent storm up here in VT.
I'm gonna fill the diesel tanks for the tractor on my way home and then get my kite and board ready. All that powder AND wind?! I'm so fucking stoked!!!
