Definitely a rattlesnake - check the tip of the tail, visible to the right of its head (right side on the picture, left side for the snake).

Just a wee baby, but still all "come at me bro, I gonna bite ya!"

Neat critters, but I'm glad we don't have many of them here. We have timber rattlers in the mountains, and copperheads around me, but I don't think I've ever seen one. I did see a suspicious snake at a mountain rest area once, but I was too tired to check it out. All I was interested in was sleep.

almost stepped right on a copperhead about a month ago in my backyard, member of the diamond back family... ran right out of my shoes (literally).

Here is a black tail adult I saw last week a couple miles from where this one was today.

The markings on that one LOOK like a rattlesnake. The first one...not so much..at least, not in that pic.

Fuck all rattlesnakes...gawd-damned shakey-tails...

This one shows the tail a bit better. It wasn't a very cooperative subject.

The triangular head gave it away as a dangerous snake. I didn't see the rattle until the other shot.

Can you get closer and take a better pic? :awe:

Are you a snake handler?
Nope, but I've met a few. Snake handling struck me mostly as a form of ancestor worship or respect for the dead more than any testament of faith. "My grandfather did this and he was a good man, my father did this and he was a good man, so I'm going to do this as well and maybe I'll be remembered like them."

Nah, he's IronWing, the Snake Whisperer.
Actually that is true. Typical conversation:

"Ooh, snake!"
<_l_l_>
"Hi there"
<_O_l_>
"Hold on while I get my camera ready."
<moves away>
"It's okay, just getting a pic."
<starts to coil>
<click, click>
"Damn auto focus."
<rattle, rattle>
"Hold on, just one more"
<RATTLE, RATTLE, RATTLE>
"Okay, I think we're done."

The baby couldn't do much more than a faint buzz.
