The head shape lets you know it's a viper. The only venomous snake in America that doesn't have a triangle shaped head is the Coral Snake.

Which is why I said:

Corn snake? Has similar markings, but the head looks different.

And:

It's definitely got the head of a pit viper, but the markings are different than any rattlesnake I've ever seen.
