Smoking should be ILLEGAL

I think smoking should be made illegal.
Are there any arguments other than "I want to be the one deciding how to kill myself?"

Before you flame me, think:

1. Smoking is terrible for your health, and killed millions of people.
2. People smoke mostly because they "started and can't quit".
3. Chances are, they never would've started smoking if it were illegal.
4. Unlike drugs which may make you "high" and "feel good", smoking usually does not.
5. It is bad not only to you but also those around you, etc.
6. Pregnant women smoke and that results in birth defects.
7. Making smoking illegal is likely to prevent your kids from smoking, too. Your Mom tried to stop you, but she couldn't.
8. There is no special case where smoking is good for you. It's bad, period. So why not ban it?!

Would this be a case of the government "limiting our freedoms"? Yes, but so what?. Other laws that limit our freedoms make killing, raping, stealing, setting someone's car on fire, among other things, illegal as well. It's the job of every parent to prevent their kids from smoking, but many fail. Maybe the law can help. Some people need more encouragement than others 😉

If we ban it now, in 65-70 years no one will even remember this nasty habbit!

And a question to those who smoke: do you think you'd be better off never having started smoking in the first place? Don't you regret it? Does it still "seem cool"? I bet not. And it costs you a pretty penny.

😀

I bet these same arguments were made before prohibition.

1. So what. it's a free country.
2. Who cares.
3. Smoking weed and underage drinking is pretty rampant.
4. Smoking does make you feel good and does make you relaxed. How are you gonna knock smoking if you've never done it?
5. Never been proven that second hand smoke is as bad as they make it out to be.
6. That's the pregnant woman's fault. No one forces them to smoke, they obviously dont care about their baby.
7. Shut the hell up, it's too early to be arguing.

You going to go back 500+ years and ban smoking in America? Smoking is here and it always will be. If you do not like it, that is your problem, but let people do what they want.

Smoking has been around far longer than any laws in the US.

I could care less if someone else wants to smoke. I just hate having smoke blown in my face and making my clothes reek. I guess thats my fault for going public places where smoking is allowed tho? Oh well, it'll never go away.. might as well accept it. Cigarettes make too much money for too many people and they won't ever let their business be ripped from them.

Wouldn't it be much more difficult for them to get sigarettes if smoking was against the law?

Doesn't always work out so easily. Many schools it's easier to get weed than alcohol.

I disagree. The only argument you have their is banning pregnant women smoking, because it harms someone other than yourself. And even there it will be tough.

I think ALL drugs should be legalized (18+). If you want to screw yourself up, well than it is none of my damn (or anyone elses) buisness.

And if all drugs are legalized, I am certain usage will go down and violence related to drugs will go down for sure.

so is being a geek.. I guess you are in alot of trouble, eh?

hehehe. i might be in trouble if i already didnt have girlfriend 🙂 but you can hide the geek traits better then you can hide smoking.

Although I don't smoke, I think that is a interesting argument. Then what about alcohol? It is bad for you and a lot of the arguments hold true. Do you drink? Let's say I don't approve of drinking and think it should be illegal. Do you then agree with all of the arguments you made above?

Yeah, that tactic really worked with cannabis

Please correct me if i'm wrong.

It may make you relaxed, but the biggest reason you're not relaxed is because you've developed an addiction to nicotine, and not having it makes you antsy. To credit it for solving a problem that it created in the first place doesn't seem right.

no argument here, we all know how Prohibition worked out

Point #2 is the only reason I agree with you. Because it is a harmful physically addictive substance. Nobody I know who smokes likes it, it's just a habit they started because of peer pressure.

If it weren't for point #2, #6 wouldn't happen. If it wasn't addictive, then why would a pregnant mother partake in something both non-enjoyable and expensive, at the risk of their baby. I don't like Pot but I'd gladly favor a law that made cigarettes illegal in place of legal pot (filtered, regulated, and sold like cigarettes). I would keep cigars and pipe tobacco legal though (they don't have the 200 chemicals added like cigarettes do).

Well since smoking rates are similar now to how they were in the past something needs to be done. Adults who already smoke fvck em, but so many start when they're kids and kids are too stupid to know better (though not all are that stupid thankfully).

OK, but who is responsible for the kids doing the right thing. The parents should know if their children are smoking and take care of the situation. Also put the blame on the people who sold the kids the cigarettes, here they have to be carded so this should cut down on the number of kids buying cigarettes.

My parents didn't even need to tell me not to smoke. I knew it was bad, so I didn't do it. I tried to discourage my friends from smoking - which is the opposite of most teenagers do nowadays.

I think that people who start smoking after a certain date should have to pay their own hospital bills for smoking related diseases... I live in Canada so the taxpayers are paying for their healthcare.

I didn't even know that. It's certainly similar to someone trying to commit suicide repeatedly, and taxpayers having to pay for it.

At Army bases.. a pack of Marlboro is $1.75, 2 steps outside of the base in a local convienant store in NYC its $7.50 for the same pack of smokes?? :Q

Now how come there is a $5.75 difference in price? The state of New York puts a very high tax on cigarettes. To some the 7.50 would be enough to make them stop smoking, to the majority its not and NY state gets mad money to help pay for social services, cops, schools, health care etc...

Now take Cigarrettes OUT of the picture. That equates to ME and the rest of the Tax Payers who DON'T smoke anyway getting tax INCREASES to pay for the services that once were payed from the cigarrettes. I'm pretty sure many other states around the nation have the same policy.

See smoking is helpful to my wallet and detremental to my health. So there is a pay off for lower taxes... smokers. 🙁 Unless the State can scrap up money without Taxing me, I don't know how else to combat smokers
