For those of you that don't think 3 cigs a day is bad for you, the InterHEART study found that 1-5 cigs a day increased your risk of a heart attack by 40%.

Tell your friend he might want to rethink this...

You have to register to view that. Was that a peer reviewed study?

Oops my bad. You can google scholar for the article, but it's pretty long and intense paper. I have the pdf if anyone wants it. Anyway, here is the pertinent part:

INTERHEART showed that smoking 1-5 cigarettes daily increases the risk of an AMI by 40%. This could cancel the beneficial effects of secondary prevention, such as aspirin, which reduces risk by 20%; it could also eliminate as much as 75% of the benefit of taking a statin. The risk increased with the amount of tobacco smoked per day (OR 9.2 in those who smoke > 40 cigarettes per day). All forms of tobacco, including filtered and nonfiltered cigarettes, pipes and cigars, and chewing tobacco, are harmful. Dr. Yusuf strongly advocates, in congruence with the official position of the ESC, that global policies for tobacco control should be implemented.

And I do believe the Lancet is a reputable journal? :D

That goes against some studies I've read on Swedish snus(my tobacco choice). With regards to snus, your chance of a heart attack is the same as it is with a non smoker, but if you do have a heart attack, you have a greater risk of death.

I'm curious to know if the stats listed in your paper are regarding a first heart attack, or for a second(or more) occurrence.

I can tell you this, I always had a "tightness" in my chest area when I was smoking, kinda scary. In 6 weeks that has completely disappeared and my coughing has been reduced to nil.Tell anyone NOT to get on the tobacco bandwagon, it's a mother****** to get off it..

That's a chew or dip right?, since your not inhaling combusted smoke your not going to have all the associated risks that go along with that. You WILL however become a nicotine addict..

This study looked at first heart attacks only. My question is, does snus give you that much pleasure that you would gamble with odds stacked at 1.4:1 against you? If you stop now, your risk of MI will pretty much drop back down to normal after 2-3 years.

Yea, it's a smokeless tobacco similar to dip, but the processing's a bit different. I've been a nicotine addict for years, I'm not too concerned about that :^D

I enjoy tobacco in all it's forms, and I'll smoke a cigarette every week or so. I used to smoke regularly, but I switched over to snus and nasal snuff. Like I said, life's here to enjoy. I don't want to live to 90 if I can't have fun on the way.

Absolutely, I love tobacco. I like going to bed with snus in my mouth. The dreams are fantastic :^)

I think it would be safe, when you consider other polluants we inhale each day. Look at people who work in mines, etc. Or spend 15 minutes soldering a component on a circuit board and that's probably equivalent to a cig, inhaling all that lead gas.

Some people's systems are also more tolerant then others. Some people smoke 2 packs a day and end up living till 90. (ok, so they got an oxygen tank, 34 different medications, and dentures, but they're still alive! :p)

nicotine among other things is a vascular constrictor. and all it's metabolites are carcinogens. causes massive oxidative stress.

are you serious? You think people who spend their lives in mines have anything remotely close to healthy lungs? I know this is ATOT, but the ignorance in this thread is just overwhelming.

o_O

Nicotine isn't carcinogenic at all.

Yup, that's why I went cold turkey, I checked into E-cigs but once I found out about the constrictor effects of nicotine even if administered in a safer format, ie: dip, patch, lozenge, E-cig, ect. I just decided to none of the above..

Hell grilled meat has carcinogens, cleaning products in the home have em, and too much sun can cause cancer.

All true, but smoking is just pummeling you with 'em and that's the key.

How is it "the key"? Everything in moderation, maybe 3 cigs a day is pushing it. But I've never had my doctor raise an eyebrow at my 1 or 2 cigs every couple days.

See if you can go a week without smoking at all and then you'll know if it's ok or not. I'm not even referring to the health impact at this point.

In the interest of time, he probably thought it wasn't worth it to try to convince you to completely stop smoking. He has to balance what little time he has with your more pressing issues. That's not to say that he supports your smoking though. It's all about harm reduction.
