I cannot get over the texture. To be fair, I have only tried them twice, and they may be as good as everyone claims they are.

We have some really good seafood available to us here in the Pacific Northwest. I regularly buy a few dozen oysters still in their shells, shuck 'em and eat 'em raw at home with a little fresh squeezed lemon and prepared horseradish.

So good.

But this thread is about smoked oysters, and I've had them a few times. They're ok. I don't dislike them. For me it's: Live > Cooked on the half shell (i.e. Rockafeller-ish) > Deep fried in batter > canned.

Im not a fan of oysters. Ive tried the smoked one but they were a cheap brand. I can eat them raw but its a meh. Clams on the other hand mmmmmmmm.

I wish someone had some high end smoked ones so I could try them. I would hate to drop $30 and hate them

They have a weird texture. They seem to come apart a little too easily. I like them ok, but I'm not a huge fan. My favorite is raw oysters, but I don't really trust them. There's too much garbage in the water, and their job is to filter garbage, so I don't eat many oysters.

Trader Joe's has the same ones as the Amazon link for $2.69 each. I bought two today for trial test. I'm going back tonight to clean out the store shelf. These are from South Korea. I believe these were recalled and banned last year but I still trust South Korea oysters. I would never touch oysters from China.

I'm the same way- I like raw oysters, but don't love them and don't really trust them either...I've never had canned smoked oysters.

I don't get raw oysters.

They taste of slightly fishy sea water plus whatever you add to them plus they have the texture of phlegm.

I can see the attraction in most things even if I don't like them but I don't really see an upside to raw oysters.

Last time I had like 4-5 different types from different waters (in Seattle so there's quite a selection here) - they actually tasted very different- it seemed the smaller ones had a much more distinctive flavor. There was one kind that was pretty big and did not taste all that great at all. A friend of mine worked at an oyster bar and he really developed a palate for them - knows all the different types/tastes etc.

Given that you're not supposed to chew them, you just sort of slurp and swallow, I'm calling shens on there being a great difference.

I live a 5 minute drive from the coast. Oysters, clams, scallops and mussels come from a shell, not a can. For that matter so do shrimp, lobster and crab.

I absolutely love raw oysters, but I'm more hesitant to eat them these days. Never know wtf they've been in.

The smoked ones are good, but not something I get regularly at all.

I'm same way. I've switched to more mussels because they are farmed sustainably. Less chance of nastiness.

Eh, most people I know that are really in to them do chew them so you DO taste them.

I agree- if you're just taking a "shot" and swallowing them, then you're really just tasting the salt water and what ever sauce you put on them. I personally eat them like you would a clam - chewing before swallowing.

Yeah, I always chew, never understood doing them as a shot.

Man, I'm getting some cravings.
